The show might be titled SpongeBob SquarePants, but SpongeBob is not the only star of the show. (Get it? Star? Starfish?) Patrick stole our hearts with his lovable demeanor and sweet simplicity. He was the best and the worst of friends simultaneously. His low intelligence caused SpongeBob and company numerous problems, but his loyalty and innocence could never be denied. Patrick has some of the most quotable lines of the show, and his moments interacting with the other characters are just as memorable as SpongeBob's. If a show were to be created that revolved solely around Patrick, odds are, we would watch it.

Throughout the course of the long-running show, Patrick has featured in many episodes, sometimes as the main characters, other times as a beloved side character. His history has been developed over time, and there are quite a few diamonds hidden in his past. And by diamonds, we mean amazing tidbits that made us laugh or drop our jaws open in shock. When we first meet Patrick, all the way back in the first season of SpongeBob SquarePants, if you can remember that far back, all we know about him is that he's SpongeBob's friend and neighbor, he lives underneath a rock, and he annoys Squidward nearly as much as SpongeBob does.

The small truths behind Patrick's character reveal more than this first glimpse, and we're sure glad it does. Some of these things are insane, but for a show like SpongeBob SquarePants, insane is par for the course. Here is our list of 25 shocking things we've learned about Patrick during the time we've known him.

25 Big Sister Sam

via: spongebob.wikia.com, spongebobia.com

Patrick's sister was not introduced until season 7, but when she did make her appearance, she did it with a splash. Larger than Patrick, and even more brutish, she immediately comes across as a callback to a Neanderthal. She is intensely protective of Patrick, and grossly over-punishes those who she thinks have slighted him. The reason for her absence in Patrick's life until now was that when they were both younger, they had been separated by the surf. Funnily enough, her presence makes us appreciate what intelligence Patrick possesses. And while it was nice to get a glimpse at Patrick's older sister, we were not too devastated when she departed by the episode's end.

24 He's Got A Degree?!

via: spongebob.wikia.com

That's right. Patrick went to college. This is mentioned in the episode where SpongeBob has to deal with a bully at Boating School. In a panic, SpongeBob calls Patrick to help protect him, only to find out that Patrick was best buds with the bully at community college. That can mean only one thing: Patrick went to community college! The idea is astounding in its absurdity. Patrick could barely last one day at Boating School when he accompanied SpongeBob one day to his class. How are we supposed to believe that he made it through college classes? His attention span is not the greatest, and his base intelligence is self-admittedly poor. But if there is one thing SpongeBob SquarePants is great at, it's presenting us with absurd notions that we laughingly accept.

23 A Bad Case Of Arachnophobia

via: youtube.com (2023PerfectDark)

In at least two episodes, we learn that Patrick is terribly afraid of spiders. When SpongeBob has to spend the night at Patrick's because his pineapple house was devoured by nematodes, we see that Patrick suffers from nightmares of spiders attacking him. Unfortunately for SpongeBob, during his nightmare, Patrick unconsciously slams his house up and down on top of SpongeBob. And when Squidward starts wearing a toupee that looks eerily like a sea spider, of course Patrick wants to smash it off of his face. Arachnophobia, in our opinion, is a very rational fear. Similar to being afraid of snakes, there is something about the shape of the arachnid that instills an almost instinctive fear of the creepy crawler. The fact that Patrick shares this fear with some of us (me, definitely me) makes us like him more.

22 The Nose Controversy

via: stuffpoint.com, genius.com

Patrick's nose is a surprisingly tough nut to crack. Does he have one? Did he get one? Can he grow one? The answer to all of those questions is yes. Several times in several episodes, Patrick is seen with a single nostril defining the area where a nose should be. But another episode was devoted to the story of Patrick obtaining his first true nose. It shriveled up and died when it smelled a stench too horrible to be smelled. Yet another time, when SpongeBob and Patrick were engaged in a dirty/clean war, Patrick grew his own nose in order to poke it and spread his boogers around. So which is it? Does he already have one that we just can't see? Did he only truly have a nose during that one episode where he got a nose job? Or can he grow one on command? The nature of the show makes it so that all these circumstances can be valid. It is hard to understand, but not difficult to enjoy.

21 Patrick, The Fast And The Furious

via: youtube.com (Nickelodeon)

One of the mainstays of the show is that SpongeBob cannot drive, no matter how much he tries to learn. He has attended Boating School since season 1, but to no avail. Patrick, clearly not as smart as SpongeBob, should be in the same boat. (Boat? Boating School? Get it?) But for some unexplained reason, Patrick is a better driver than SpongeBob. When SpongeBob desperately wanted to pass his Boating Test, he called on Patrick to help him during the exam. This counted as cheating, but the two of them didn't know it at the time. Another time, angry on SpongeBob's behalf for failing the test, Patrick took the test to see if it was rigged. And he passed! Driving is more of a physical skill than an academic one, but it takes moderate intelligence to operate a vehicle. So either Patrick is a savant at driving, or he has been fooling us this entire time into thinking he's dumb.

20 It's a No Brainer

via: dailyhumorpix.wordpress.com, teepublic.com

When rolling around ideas for Patrick's character, one of his traits that his creators decided early on was that he would not be intelligent. It is an attribute that sets him apart from the other characters of Bikini Bottom. Squidward, Mr. Krabs, and SpongeBob all possess an average level of smartness, hampered only by their own character flaws (arrogance, greed, and naivete, respectively). And Sandy Cheeks is beyond intelligent. Patrick being dumb has made him unique. The reason for this particular characteristic belonging to Patrick is biological. Starfish themselves do not have a brain, so a character based on a slow-moving starfish would not make sense if he was quick-witted. And as seen in the show, Patrick spends most of his time with his brain not properly connected.

19 What's In A Name?

via: characters.wikia.com

One of the neat things about SpongeBob SquarePants is that the cartoon characters in the the show (at least the main ones) have last names. This is not always the case in children's cartoon TV shows. We all know SpongeBob's last name, and we learn about Sandy Cheeks, Eugene Krabs, Squidward Tentacles, and even Sheldon Plankton. And we think we know that Patrick's last name is Star, but that turns out to not really be the case. It actually has changed in various episodes. The majority of the time he is Patrick Star, but sometimes he is called Patrick Seastar or he is called Patrick Starfish. The reason for this mutability is not explained.

18 The Amazing Flying Starfish

via: spongebob.wikia.com

There is one episode of SpongeBob SquarePants where SpongeBob harbors the great desire to fly like the jellyfish. He searches for any way in which he can soar in the "sky," but nothing seems to work until he discovers the joy of infatable pants that cause him to float around Bikini Bottom. It is a delightful episode, which ends with the jellyfish carrying SpongeBob so that he can fly with them. That's not the part of the ending that makes it so special. When the jellyfish drop SpongeBob at his home, Patrick amble along as per usual. But what is unusual is that when Patrick leaves, he takes off into the sky, flying away like a super hero. So apparently, Patrick has the ability to fly.

17 Daddy Issues

via: scratch.mit.edu

The characters in SpongeBob SquarePants are stuck in this limbo between childhood and adulthood. They hold jobs, but they also partake in childish activities. In a great episode where Patrick and SpongeBob take on the responsibility of caring for a baby scallop, we get a look at what Patrick would be like if he ever matured into parenthood. It was not a pretty picture. Patrick did not care for the baby with the same diligence that SpongeBob did. He would traipse off every morning to go to "work" and come home too tired to give SpongeBob a break from scallop-rearing. And this "work" consisted of sitting underneath his rock and eating ice cream while he watched TV. So for future reference, we know that Patrick would make a horrible father. Not that we thought he would make an excellent dad before we saw that episode, but it definitely provided proof against it.

16 Poor Broke Starfish

via: vimeo.com (Ashley Benzwie)

A big mystery revolving around Patrick is how he receives money. We've seen in several episodes Patrick pull out some money to pay for certain items. But how did he get the cash? Patrick has never proven that he can hold a job. When he tries to get a job at the Krusty Krab, he practically fires himself with his incompetence. Plankton has hired him a couple of times too, but to be frank, we've never seen Patrick show a lick of interest in money, so it stands to reason that he worked for Plankton for nothing. This doesn't explain how Patrick gets money to buy anything he wants. It is one of the big unsolved mysteries of the show.

15 Happy Birthday, Patrick!

via: spongebob.wikia.com

Unlike SpongeBob, Patrick's date of birth is never written on any of the identification cards that he shows during the show. He shows off his driver license to SpongeBob one time, but it conspicuously lacks his birthday. Another time, Man Ray shows Patrick his own identification card, but that too does not show a date of birth. So when is our favorite pink starfish's birthday? Several online SpongeBob encyclopedias reveal that Patrick's birthday is some time in February. One even narrows down the year to 1978. We think that having these characters ageless would be a better practice. Without a birthday, they do not age, and we can happily watch them as simple, immortal cartoons.

14 An Innie Or An Outie

via: pinterest.com, tvtropes.org

Just like there can be right-handed or left-handed people, some people are born with belly buttons that are concave or convex. This is more conventionally called as having either an innie or an outie. Patrick is in Camp Innie. This is more demonstrably shown in the episode where Patrick desperately wants to purchase a balloon. He searches both of his pockets frantically, and then as a last-ditch effort, he examines the inner recesses of his belly button for some spare change. He find nothing but lint, a paper clip, and an old ticket. As viewers, we were treated to the interesting fact that Patrick has an innie. All other innie-owners now have Patrick Star as a comrade.

13 Prehistoric Relatives

via: spongebob.wikia.com

In another clever episode that mimicked aspects of 2001: A Space Odyssey, we are introduced to Patar, Patrick's prehistoric ancestor. As proof that SpongeBob and Patrick's friendship is fated, even their ancient relatives are the best of friends. Patar and SpongeGar tramp around their prehistoric environments with reckless abandon. They even have a crotchety neighbor named Squog, ancestor to Squidward, who they annoy just as much their future counterparts annoy the future Squidward. Patrick's personality traits are just as apparent in Patar as they are in him. They are slower on the uptake than others, but hilarious in their foolish behavior.

12 A Doctor Fetish

via: spongebobepisodebyepisodereview.blogspot.com

Despite having no job, it may be that Patrick has aspirations to the medical profession. Twice so far, Patrick has pretended to be a doctor to cure SpongeBob of his ailments. This could be explained as Patrick trying to be a good friend to SpongeBob. His impersonation of a doctor was just him attempting to help his best friend. We would believe that, except Patrick does his fake job so poorly, it cannot be believed that he's trying to help SpongeBob. When SpongeBob gets a bad case of the Suds, Patrick prevents him from going to a real doctor where his sickness could have been easily cured. And when SpongeBob gets a simple splinter, Patrick exponentially worsens the condition. That splinter episode still has us cringing inside.

11 That Diet Must Be Working

via: youtube.com (Drawing Fun House)

Patrick is SpongeBob's tubbly best friend. And by "tubbly," we mean he is chubby and roughly the shape of a large tub of fat. But he's still cute. In several episodes, Patrick's affinity for food is pointed out. And by "affinity for food," we mean that he gorges himself on things that are not necessarily healthy. So imagine our surprise, when we caught a glimpse of his identification card, and it said he only weighs two ounces. A measly two ounces! That is about as heavy as a tennis ball, which does not weigh that much in case you have never held a tennis ball. Apparently all that weight that Patrick looks like he's carrying weighs next to nothing.

10 All Muscle

via: youtube.com (GFK26)

We never see Patrick participate in sports or a physical pastime, but that doesn't mean he is not freakishly strong. Guess some part of his two-ounce weight contains some muscle mass. At different points in the show, Patrick displays his unique physical capabilities in an extraordinary fashion. One of those notable times (and my personal favorite) is during season 1's Valentine's Day episode. Patrick, enraged that his best friend SpongeBob got him absolutely nothing for the holiday while giving complete strangers exorbitant gifts, goes on a rampage at the Valentine's Day Fair. SpongeBob did get Patrick something, but by the time the gift shows up, Patrick is too far along in his Hulk-like fury. He throws bystanders around, rips stands and rides up, and even snaps a lollipop in two.

9 The Eyebrow Change

via: spongebob.wikia.com

A subtle change occurred to Patrick's eyebrows between season 1 and season 2 of SpongeBob SquarePants. In the first season, his eyebrows were shaped like the letter M, though of course they were on their sides. Starting in season 2, his eyebrows became shaped like the letter Z. When his eyebrows were shaped like the letter M, they were more thinly drawn. When they made the change to look like Zs, they were drawn more thickly. This change does not amount to much, but it is interesting to see how our favorite pink starfish developed from the first season to the second. If any one of you noticed those subtle differences in animation, here's the reason why.

8 The Teeth Controversy

via: rivieraevents.com

Like his nose, the state of Patrick's teeth is a bit of a mystery. Sometimes he is seen with a full set of teeth, as seen by his charming smiles. Other times, when the show calls for him to be especially adorable, they will have him grin a single-toothed grin. And yet other times he is seen with absolutely no teeth at all. If he does have teeth, it is safe to assume he won't have them for long. Patrick has such poor hygiene skills, we doubt he would practice good dental care. And, as shown during his fight with SpongeBob over being dirty versus being clean, he disdains cleanliness. His poor pearly whites are probably desiccated yellows now.

7 A Love Of Mermaids

via: stuffpoint.com

Mermaids hold a special place in Patrick's heart. Patrick develops instant and intense crushes on mermaids when he first lays eyes on them. When he runs into a gaggle of mermaids at the Bikini Bottom Triangle, he likes them even though they show no interest in him. Mindy, however, is Patrick's chief love interest. Mindy is the daughter of King Neptune. She is a kind and resourceful mermaid, and we approve of Patrick's crush on her. Better her than those darned materialistic mermaids. Given how Patrick's crushes have only been on mermaids, it is obvious that he has developed a particular liking to them, for some unknown reason.

6 Sweet Furniture

via: spongebob.wikia.com

Inconsistencies just seem to gravitate toward Patrick. First his nose, then his teeth, and now the layout of his house. We all know that Patrick lives under a rock, but exactly how it looks under there changes from episode to episode. Sometimes there is nothing but flat sand underneath the rock, not even a pit. Other times, a circular pit that matches the circumference of the rock is where Patrick calls home. Other times, Patrick seems to have rooms within his pit, like a kitchen and a living room. And his furniture changes. As we saw when Patrick was hurriedly trying to get his house presentable for his parents, he makes his own furniture. We have to imagine that Patrick creates the layout of his house every time that rock slams down. That's more creativity than we usually credit him for.
