Square Enix finally gave fans a peek at their upcoming Avengers game, leaving everyone to ask: Where's Hawkeye? The Cinematic trailer featured all of our familiar favorites looking much as they did in The Avengers film from 2012. Captain America, Iron Man, Thor, Black Widow, and Bruce Banner, later the Hulk, all took some piece of the action as an attack on San Francisco played out.

Meanwhile, Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye, was nowhere to be seen. Was he on vacation that day, or at the dentist? Fans of the comics and films are becoming understandably annoyed to see a game stylized so much like the film, only to exclude a main character from the reveal. There cannot be any argument that Hawkeye is any less of an Avenger. He was there from the beginning, in every film, and is getting his own show after (or perhaps before) the events of Avengers: Endgame. So, why was our favorite bow-wielding hero snubbed from the game trailer?

The exclusion of Hawkeye feels a bit like déjà vu after the release of Avengers: Infinity War. We know now exactly where Clint was during that time, and he came back to join the fight in the end, but it is odd to have him missing from the reveal of a property that he has been core to for the past seven years in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) and in the comics since 1965. This is not some low-level snub we’re talking about.

That said, there is always the possibility that Hawkeye’s absence is literally history repeating himself. Maybe Square Enix is going to reveal the character later, or in some future content release, quipping about how he’s been missing again, like with Infinity War. It is possible, though purely speculation.

At this point, we have so little information about the game aside from the brief reveal trailer that there is no sense getting too upset. We here are optimistic that Hawkeye will be making his way into the game in some way.

Perhaps the best way to address this snafu would be to make a second trailer, where it was Clint’s day to go pick up lunch and he arrives back at the destruction with six orders of shawarma.

Marvel's Avengers will be making its appearance on May 15, 2020. We should be getting a far clearer picture of exactly what the gameplay and design of the game is in the near future. For now, it’s still anyone’s guess. The game will be launching on the PS4, Xbox One, Windows PC, and Google Stadia.
