Square Enix E3 2018 Presentation: The Trailers And Highlights

Square Enix is one of the most beloved video game developers of all time. They have had a mixed history at E3, which is partly due to the passion that they inspire with their games. You will always see fans disappointed when Parasite Eve 3 or Final Fantasy Tactics 2: Argus' Revenge isn't announced, especially when Square Enix has made such a push towards the mobile market.

Expectations are sky high, with fans desperate to see some new footage of games like Kingdom Hearts III and the Final Fantasy VII Remake. Did they deliver on our hopes and dreams? Let's find out...

Shadow Of The Tomb Raider

The best E3 trade shows open up with something entirely new. Square Enix decided to open up with a game that was revealed weeks ago.

Square Enix opened up with a brief trailer of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. This was followed by some gameplay footage that promised new and exciting ways for Lara Croft to dispose of her enemies, as the game takes place in a jungle environment.

The gameplay demo then proceeded to show Lara pulling off all of the same moves and tricks that we saw in Rise of the Tomb Raider, except the leaves around her were green, instead of being covered in snow.

Final Fantasy XIV & Monster Hunter World Crossover

We were given a brief glimpse at some of the new boss battles and encounters that are coming in Final Fantasy XIV: Stormblood's upcoming patch, which showed us more enemies from the world of Ivalice.

One of the most exciting reveals from Square Enix's conference was the announcement of a crossover event between Final Fantasy XIV and Monster Hunter World, which showed Rathalos appearing in the world of Eorzea. The crossover event will be happening this Summer.

It remains to be seen whether this crossover will work both ways. The hunters from Monster Hunter World would surely jump at the chance to fight a Cactuar...

The Adventures Of Captain Spirit

We were shown another trailer of The Adventures of Captain Spirit, which is an upcoming game that is set in the Life is Strange universe.

The Adventures of Captain Spirit stars a new character named Chris and the superhero persona he takes on when he is at play. The developers revealed that there will be hints and secrets within The Adventures of Captain Spirit that will reveal information about the upcoming second season of Life is Strange.

The Adventures of Captain Spirit will be a free download, which suggests that it is going to be incredibly short.

Dragon Quest XI & Final Fantasy Brave Exvius Crossover

We were given our first glimpse at the English localization of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, which is due to be released on September 4th.

It seems that Square Enix is determined to keep hold of the "Most British Video Game Series Ever" title, as the new Dragon Quest world is once again filled with accents from all across the United Kingdom.

Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is a highly anticipated game, as it received a perfect score in Famitsu magazine and was adored by critics in Japan. We just wish it would get here sooner.

An upcoming crossover event between Dragon Quest XI and Final Fantasy Brave Exvius was also announced.

Babylon's Fall

The most intriguing game shown at Square Enix's E3 press conference was a brand new title, called Babylon's Fall. This title is being developed by PlatinumGames, who have also worked on the Bayonetta series and Nier: Automata.

Babylon's Fall featured a montage of different events in the history of a fictional setting, which was followed by some incredible fight scenes between armored individuals who wouldn't look out of place in a Dark Souls game.

We were only given a brief glimpse at Babylon's Fall, but what little we saw has left us intrigued as to what the full game will look like.

Nier Automata: Become As Gods Edition

A trailer for Nier Automata: Become as Gods Edition was shown. This was the exact same trailer that was shown yesterday at the Microsoft conference.

Nier Automata: Become as Gods Edition will feature all of the previously released DLC for the game. It is also being released on the Xbox One. This enhanced edition of the game will be released on June 26th.

Octopath Traveler

We were given another look at Octopath Traveler, which is the upcoming RPG for the Nintendo Switch. This is the game that features beautifully drawn graphics that look like a diorama that has been brought to life.

Octopath Traveler follows the story of eight different characters within a fantasy world. Each of these characters possesses unique abilities that affect how they work in the game world. This is a title that is meant to appeal to the old school Square Enix fans, with its turn-based combat and class change system. This game looks like a love letter to the 16-bit era of Square Enix games.

Octopath Traveler will be released for the Nintendo Switch on July 13th.

Just Cause 4

Information about Just Cause 4 has been leaking over the past few days, to the point where no one was surprised when it was shown during Microsoft's E3 conference.

We were given a little more information about Just Cause 4 during the Square Enix show. The game will have a much greater focus on environment and weather effects, to the point where natural disasters will play a major role in the game.

Just Cause 4 will be released on December 4th.

The Quiet Man

The next trailer was for a game called The Quiet Man. This trailer surprised us with the fact that it showed live-action footage. We saw a young man take on some latino gangsters in an alley. The game then shifted to computer graphics, which might have made for an impressive edit if the 3D models didn't look like they were ripped from a Nintendo 64 game.

The trailer seemed to hint that the main character was deaf, which may be something that is worked into how the game works. We weren't given enough information to reach a decisive conclusion on the matter, so we will have to wait and see.

Kingdom Hearts III

Square Enix's conference ended with footage of Kingdom Hearts III, which was also the same footage that they showed yesterday at the Microsoft conference, where they also announced that the game will be coming to the Xbox One.

The trailer for Kingdom Hearts III revealed that there will be a Frozen world in the new game. This trailer blew our minds... yesterday, when we saw it at the Xbox One show.

It's odd that no new footage of Kingdom Hearts III was saved for the Square Enix show. The game is so close to release that they surely could have put a new trailer together, even a brief one?

Conclusion

The Square Enix presentation almost felt like a kid who hadn't prepared for a presentation for school, so they were winging it as they went along.

The reveals would have been more impressive if the best ones hadn't already been revealed yesterday at the Microsoft conference. It's odd that Square Enix gave so much material to the Xbox One show, which may suggest a closer working relationship between the two companies in the future.

There is no denying that the Square Enix presentation was a letdown, as there was almost no new material on show. Fans will undoubtedly be disappointed at the lack of any new footage of the Final Fantasy VII Remake, or any new material for the Nintendo Switch.

It's possible that the choice cuts are being saved for the Sony and Nintendo conferences, which would make the Square Enix show seem totally pointless.
