No sooner do we have rumors of a PS5 exclusive Final Fantasy game about to be announced at E3 do we get another rumor that seems to corroborate what we're seeing on sites like Reddit and ResetEra. This latest rumor, courtesy of FanByte's Imran Khan, points to a Final Fantasy spinoff with a Soulslike bent and set in the world of the very first Final Fantasy game.

According to Khan's sources, the game will be called Final Fantasy Origin, and will release as a PS5 exclusive with a PC release to follow at a later date. Along with announcements for Final Fantasy XVI and Endwalker, Origin will serve as a "tentpole" for Square Enix's E3 presentation.

Square Enix is working with Koei Tecmo's Team Ninja to create Final Fantasy Origin. The game will be an action RPG similar to Nioh but somewhat more accessible. It'll also have a public alpha called "Stranger in Paradise” that’ll arrive later this summer and be similar to Nioh's public alphas.

The team working on Final Fantasy Origin is said to be comprised of the same people who made the Final Fantasy fighting game Dissidia NT as well as Nioh developers, but with the caveat that Team Ninja is a very fluid environment with specific people floating into and out of projects all the time.

Of course, this is all just rumor so far. Square Enix has made no announcements about their E3 presentation so far and offered no comment on the latest rumors. We’ll certainly find out one way or the other as we approach E3 in June.

In addition to a big Final Fantasy announcement, Square Enix might also have some big Dragon Quest news coming at E3. That's according to Dragon Quest creator Yuji Horii, who teased "that game" for Dragon Quest's 35th anniversary. Fans have their hopes up for a reveal on Dragon Quest 12, but again, we’ll have to wait for E3 to find out.
