The developer behind several critically acclaimed mobile games including Hitman and Lara Croft Go, Square Enix Montreal, recently rebranded, becoming Studio Onoma. This of course comes in the wake of its high profile acquisition by Embracer Group earlier this year.

Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal were purchased alongside Square Enix Montreal by Embracer Group in May, but while the former were allowed to maintain their corporate identities, the studio in question has been given a brand new name and logo in addition to a completely and thoroughly updated website. When it comes to the reason for this change, "Onoma is Greek for ‘name’ and names offer endless possibilities,” the company said in a statement.

“As we start a new chapter as Studio Onoma, we wanted to share behind-the-scenes insights into our rebrand story,” the statement reads. “Our strength has always been our ability to evolve and adapt to trends and market changes. Our rebrand as Studio Onoma is one more transformation that we are excited to take on. Our new brand identity will serve as an umbrella to multiple products, programs, and initiatives, each with distinct personalities.”

“We have built the Onoma brand to be flexible to see us into the future, connect with multiple audiences, and not hinder us from expanding with the market,” the statement continues. “Our name and look might have changed, but we are still us: a studio that empowers creativity and innovation and always puts people before products.”

According to the website, Studio Onoma currently has three mobile projects in development alongside the previously announced Tomb Raider Reloaded and Avatar Generations. The company also has a brand new Space Invaders game listed as "coming soon.”

Square Enix Montreal was purchased by Embracer Group along with Crystal Dynamics and Eidos Montreal as part of a $300 million deal negotiated with former parent company Square Enix. This came to a close in August, handing control over numerous franchises including Tomb Raider, Deus Ex, Thief, and Legacy of Kain to Embracer Group.
