Final Fantasy 14, the popular MMORPG by Square Enix, is still going strong some ten years after its launch. In fact, the game recently became the most profitable title in the Final Fantasy series, having amassed over 24 million players. However, despite being a massive hit on both PlayStation consoles and PC, the game has yet to show up on an Xbox. Now, the game’s director has shared some news on that front, and it is looking pretty good for Xbox fans.

In a recent interview with Easy Allies, Final Fantasy 14’s director and producer Naoki Yoshida touched on the discussions happening with Microsoft to bring the popular title to Xbox. He shared that the talks are going in a positive direction, and he hopes it will happen sooner rather than later.

"I feel bad for saying the same thing every time, but we are still in discussions with Microsoft, and I feel like our discussions are going in a positive-like tone," said Yoshida. "I don't want to say we do not have an Xbox version, but I'm hoping that the timing will be very soon that I will have some kind of update to the players. I'm sure there's a lot of things that people want to ask about on this subject, and there's a lot of things I want to share, but I'm afraid I'm unable to divulge on those details, so when the time comes... I'm sure the time will come, so if you could kindly stand by, that'd be great."

It sounds like timing is the biggest obstacle standing in the way of getting the game on Xbox consoles. In fact, earlier this year Yoshida spoke to VG247 and briefly mentioned that there wasn’t necessarily any obstacle in the way of porting the game to Microsoft consoles. The only issue in making the port happen was getting the time to do it properly.

It makes sense that timing would be an issue considering how big of a year it has been for Final Fantasy 14 and Xbox. The MMORPG recently had its hands full launching the Endwalker expansion, a climactic conclusion to one of the game’s longest running storylines. Meanwhile, Microsoft has had its hands full with the continued success of the Xbox Series X|S, which recently sold over 100,000 consoles in Japan. Hopefully the coming year will see some downtime for the two entities so that the port can finally happen.
