Have you been waiting over twenty years for a sequel to Final Fantasy TacticsWell, you're going to have to keep waiting, as Square Enix is releasing a new tactical RPG, but it's linked to one of their smartphone games.

War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius was announced through a trailer that showed glimpses of different flags, with text hinting that the game will involve nations going to war.

The trailer didn't mention a platform for War of the Visions and the lack of footage makes it hard to speculate, but the fact that the original Brave Exvius is a smartphone game means that War of the Visions will likely also be one as well.

The original Final Fantasy Brave Exvius features a unique world and its own cast of characters, but it also has numerous crossovers with other Final Fantasy games and Square Enix franchises. It's likely that War of the Visions will follow this pattern in order to draw in fans of the older games.

Final Fantasy Brave Exvius also featured several crossovers with pop singer Ariana Grande, who may also appear in the game as the feared leader of a rebel faction, in the same vein as Wiegraf from Final Fantasy Tactics.

It's possible that War of the Visions was inspired by the success of Fire Emblem Heroeswhich has been a huge financial success for Nintendo, even though the Fire Emblem series didn't find a fan base outside of Japan until the Nintendo 3DS era.

War of the Visions might be an attempt to copy the same formula of Fire Emblem Heroes by using tactical RPG battles where you can summon allies that consist of the iconic characters from the Final Fantasy series, where you are constantly tempted to pay cash for a chance to summon a Cloud Strife or Yuna to help you beat a tricky boss.

Square Enix has made some of the best tactical RPGs in the history of gaming, including Bahamut Lagoon and Final Fantasy Tactics, but the fact that this game will likely appear on smartphones isn't exactly filling us with a hope that War of the Visions will live up to the standard set by Ramza Beoulve and his friends.

War of the Visions: Final Fantasy Brave Exvius is due to be released in 2019.
