A classic Square Enix game from the 16-bit era might finally be making its way overseas, as Square Enix has trademarked the Live A Live name in Australia.

Live A Live was an RPG released for the Super Famicom back in 1994. The game consisted of several different scenarios that took place at different points in history, allowing the player to experience storylines from the perspective of a caveman, a martial arts master, a ninja, a cowboy, a pro-wrestler, a psychic, and a robot. All of these storylines converge in a final chapter, where the player forms a party from the characters in the game to go on a quest to prevent the destruction of reality.

Like many JRPGs of its era, Live A Live was never released outside of Japan. The only way to play the game in English is with the aid of an unofficial fan translation. It seems that gamers will finally have a chance to play Live A Live on modern systems. According to GematsuSquare Enix has trademarked the Live A Live name in Australia. The official trademark application can be found on the WIPO website.

Square Enix has been on a porting spree over the past few years, with Romancing Saga 2 being released overseas for the first time. Trials of Mana (formerly known as Seiken Densetsu 3) was also localized into English and released as part of the Collection of Mana for Nintendo Switch. It wouldn't be too surprising to learn that Square Enix is remastering the game for modern systems, especially in the wake of all of the Final Fantasy titles that have received enhanced ports recently.

Live A Live is a fantastic game and it's worthy of a modern remaster. If the game really is making a return on modern systems, then it opens the door for other classic Square Enix games like Bahamut Lagoon or Treasure of the Rudras to be released in the future. Square Enix has promised that it will reveal more games in July and August, so we'll likely hear more about Live A Live soon.
