Remember those announcements Square Enix promised to make over the next month or so, in lieu of a presence at this year’s cancelled E3? It looks as though a celebration of the Tomb Raider franchise is on the horizon.

Now, if there’s one thing everybody knows about gamers, it’s that we can certainly be a nostalgic bunch. In recent years, new IPs have seemed to take a bit of a backseat, as lucrative remakes, re-releases and ports of beloved games make a return instead. The success of the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy, Spyro Reignited Trilogy, the mighty Final Fantasy VII Remake, and so on attests to this.

However, one gaming icon in particular has taken more of a reboot approach. Lara Croft brought us 2013’s Tomb Raider, 2015’s Rise of the Tomb Raider and Shadow of the Tomb Raider in 2018. This trilogy explored the character’s origins, the events and experiences that shaped her development into the fearless and formidable adventurer we remembered from the 1990s (and beyond).

The rebooted trilogy went toe-to-toe with contemporary open-world adventures, a modern package that appealed to franchise fans without delving back into the pre-Tomb Raider Underworld days. As a result, we haven’t seen a lot of the classic series titles on contemporary systems at all (outside of fan projects). This could all be set to change in August, though, with the supposed release of Tomb Raider Ultimate Experience.

As Evostrix reports, “T.R.U.E. Tomb Raider Ultimate Experience” seems to be 100% real. In fact, Square Enix have just trademarked that name. What isn’t so clear, however, is exactly what this package will consist of. The image above has just hit the Internet, seeming to suggest that a N. Sane Trilogy-esque selection of Lara Croft’s greatest hits is coming to Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Stadia and Steam next month.

Franchise fans would be sure to snatch up such a compilation on their system of choice, but it’s best not to get our hopes up just yet. This is far from the most elaborate and official-looking image out there and would’ve been easy to mock up. Still, it’s adding a lot of fuel to an existing fire. Nevertheless, hang tight and wait for the official word, Tomb Raider faithful.
