Squid Game was one of those things that blew up during the pandemic, like exercising and when everything became cake for some reason. Well, the pandemic is still here and it looks like Squid Game will be returning as well according to Netflix co-CEO and chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

As reported by Variety, the news was confirmed during Netflix's fourth quarter 2021 earnings call when Sandaros was asked whether the South Korean show would get a second season. “Absolutely,” he replied. “The Squid Game universe has just begun.” While this is the only information we currently have, Sandaros' choice of words could mean several different things.

The first season ended on somewhat of a cliffhanger, suggesting that a second season would go on to finish the rest of the story. But the fact that Sandaros used the words "Squid Game universe" could imply that the show will get some kind of spin-off as well. Netflix has a history of creating animated spin-offs of popular IPs, like in the case of Resident Evil and The Witcher, so don't be surprised if Squid Game gets one as well.

The show's creator, Hwang Dong-hyuk, had earlier confirmed that he was in talks with the streaming giant for a second season. “I’m in talks with Netflix over season two as well as season three,” he said. “We will come to a conclusion any time soon.” He seemed pretty positive about his discussion with Netflix, saying that there were talks for a third season as well. "We are aware that everyone is waiting [for the next season to come out] so we’re all trying to think positively about the creation of the next season,” Dong-hyuk added.

As for what will happen in the second season, Dong-hyuk confirmed that it "will be centered about Seong Gi-hun," adding: “The overall narrative will center around the people Gi-hun meets, and the people that he will be chasing after.”

The show's immense popularity resulted in crossovers across the video games industry as well. Black Desert Online added its own version of Red Light, Green Light, while some sadistic Animal Crossing: New Horizons players recreated it in the game as well.
