After a six-year run, it's official: Paramount is pulling the plug on Star Trek Discovery. This isn't quite enough to make it the shortest-running mainline Trek series - that "honour" goes to Star Trek Enterprise - but it is a far more abrupt end than most. So unsurprisingly, fans are divided on both the show, and the decision to can it after just five seasons.While some are mourning the show, grateful that it kickstarted a new generation of Trek, others shed no tears at all, feeling that it was the worst of the bunch. Then we have others who are actually happy it's gone, celebrating the end of a show that seems to have struggled to find its place in the Star Trek series.Over on the original announcement that season five would be the last time we see the Discovery crew, many fans seem disappointed, but understand why the decision was made.
However, elsewhere on Twitter, others share their disappointment with the series as a whole, feeling that it failed to live up to the standards of other Trek shows.
And then, of course, we have the section of the fanbase that is very happy to see it gone. Even if it seems that they weren't actually watching it.
Unfortunately, we have to mention that the conversation has been taken over by bigots in some areas of the fandom. One user who shared her frustration with the show's cancellation is receiving pushback from others who are openly racist, homophobic and transphobic, complaining that the show was "woke" for having a Black female lead and queer characters. Something that Star Trek has never done before, of course.
In fact, it's very hard to find Trek viewers who are celebrating the cancellation of the show for reasons that aren't bigoted. Of course, there will be plenty of well-meaning fans who simply had issues with the show's plot and writing, but there's a loud portion crying "woke" at anything they don't like.
With this in mind, Discovery leaves an uncertain legacy behind. Perhaps in the years to come, it will become better known as the series that brought us new shows such as Brave New World, Lower Decks, and Picard. Of course, I'm sure the fans would have found a new series to hate on by then. Hey, it worked for Enterprise, didn't it?
