Many Battlefront fans were excited when DICE announced they would be rebooting the fan-favorite Star Wars series using the Frostbite engine. While Battlefront 2 is in an amazing spot currently, it had a rough ride to get there.

The first game lacked significant content from Pandemic's Battlefront 2, made all the way back in 2005. Battlefront 2 in 2017 fixed these issues but brought pay to win lootboxes that have since been discarded. Even still, plenty of systems and features from the 2005 version are missing. Conversely, improvements DICE has made to the formula make it hard to go back to Pandemic's Battlefront 2. Here are 5 reasons why Battlefront 2 EA is the best, and 5 reasons why Pandemic's Battlefront is the better game.

10 Battlefront 2017: Campaign

While DICE's campaign for Battlefront 2 had its issues, it is leagues above what Pandemic created in their version of Battlefront 2 in 2005.

In DICE's campaign, players take control of Iden Versio as she fights against the Rebellion after the destruction of the Death Star. It has great voice acting, gorgeous levels, and some fun moments with iconic characters. Pandemics was focused on the fall of the Republic and Order 66, borrowing heavily from the films and using scenes from the film instead of unique, hand-crafted cutscenes. Pandemic's campaign worked more like a glorified tutorial compared to 2017's Battlefront 2 campaign.

9 Battlefront 2005: Variety

Even after the plethora of updates EA's Battlefront 2 has received over the years, it is still sorely lacking the variety of game modes and maps the original offered all those years ago.

2005's Battlefront offered game modes such as hunt, heroes vs. villains, space battles, galactic conquest, capture the flag, and more! In comparison, DICE's Battlefront contains multiple versions of team deathmatch and one version of hunt on Endor. Captial Supremecy is one of the best modes added recently, harkening back to the original conquest mode in 2005, but it simply isn't enough compared to what Pandemic has done with its large amount of modes and maps.

8 Battlefront 2017: Visuals and Sound

There is no arguing that Battlefront 2 2017 is the most beautiful Star Wars game ever created. What DICE has accomplished with the graphics and sound for this game is nothing short of astounding.

Blaster bolts make their iconic sound taken straight from the movies. Lightsabers illuminate the environment and make a crackling energy noise when active. Whether you are flying a spaceship on Kamino or playing a First Order soldier on Starkiller Base, this game makes you feel apart of the scenes from the movies rather than some sci-fi video game. While Pandemic's Battlefront was a blast to play, it simply can not compare to the presentation that 2017's Battlefront offers.

7 Battlefront 2005: AI Bots

It is no secret that the AI in both Battlefront games is rather bad, standing around and missing nearly every shot from their blaster. They make excellent cannon fodder, however.

Despite this, the amount of AI that wandered the various maps in Battlefront 2 2005 made each match feel intense and like an actual war was occurring. The skyboxes from DICE's game try to do the same, but hearing over twenty weapons fire off at the same time thanks to the abundance of bots made Pandemic's multiplayer and singleplayer matches feel alive.

6 Battlefront 2017: Space Battles

10-Battlefront II

Space battles made their debut for the series in Pandemic's Battlefront 2, which would coincidentally be the same entry that DICE would incorporate their own space battle game modes.

Besides the jaw-dropping visuals, the depth that is on offer in 2017's version makes it sour above what Pandemic created. Each ship has unique abilities that players can use in combat, which can be further customized through Star Cards. While you won't be blowing up capital ships in the 2017 variant, dogfighting through a derelict spaceship and escaping through a hanger bay is so amazing to play that it puts the 2005 version to shame.

5 Battlefront 2005: Galactic Conquest

Galactic Conquest was a unique game mode in Battlefront 2 2005 that is sadly missing from the 2017 version. While DICE has shown interest in adding it, this mode is not available in the 2017 version as of writing this.

For those who don't remember, Galactic Conquest allowed players to command a faction's army, ranging from the Republic to the Empire. Players spent turns against a friend or AI moving capital ships across the galaxy, taking over planets and purchasing bonuses to turn the tide of each match. This metagame added strategy and excellent tension in every match you played, something that no game mode in DICE's version can currently offer.

4 Battlefront 2017: Character Customization

While games like Elite Squadron included some character customization, it wasn't until EA's Battlefront 2 that we began to see Star Cards and weapon mods for every main class.

Players level up their favorite class to unlock Star Cards, Battlefront 2's version of perks. These range from granting extra damage on abilities to completely morphing a skill. Also, players can customize how their characters look with unique skins players can unlock. Heroes and soldiers alike can equip these Star Cards and skins, making each character you play feel personalized and unique.

3 Battlefront 2005: Mods

There is a small modding scene for 2017's Battlefront 2, but nothing will match the number of mods available for the 2005 version.

Mods for Pandemic's Battlefront range from adding a new map to play to completely converting the game. Some of the most notable mods are a Mass Effect conversion mod, ground to space battles, and adding Republic Commandos into the character roster. Combined with increased player limits and custom servers, Battlefront 2005 offers a large array of experiences you can't find in DICE's game.

2 Battlefront 2017: Battle Point System

An issue that Battlefront 2 2005 struggled with was allowing the most skilled players the ability to play as a hero, causing a massive snowball effect each match.

While you could make the hero be given to a random player, both were not ideal ways to grant such a powerful character. In DICE's version, reinforcements and heroes are tied to Battle Points, which you earn by killing enemies and completing objectives. These points are then spent on whatever you wish to use, ranging from vehicles to playing a Hero character. Skilled players will earn more points than non-skilled users, but the playing field to earn one is significantly fairer and gives everyone a chance to play their favorite characters.

1 Battlefront 2005: Map Design

DICE has focused on making maps in Battlefront 2 flow well, each with critical locations to fight over and areas to contest. In Pandemic's version, they focused more on keeping continuity with the films.

Take the Death Star, for instance. In DICE's version, certain bridges can be drawn back to prevent chokepoints from being accessible. In 2005's Battlefront 2, not only is this possible, but the trash compactor can be used to travel between the prison cells and the reactor. You can also fight next to the chamber where the Death Star beam fires, killing anyone who's inside when it goes off. This attention to detail extends to every map, letting fans recall their favorite scenes from the movies and books.
