The Force Unleashed is one of the most notable Star Wars games ever. While it doesn't have the depth of some other titles, it's action-packed and a lot of fun. The story is pretty interesting, too, as it all revolves around Darth Vader's incredibly powerful new apprentice, Starkiller.

The protagonist's presence alone creates intrigue. After all, a very strong force-sensitive character trained by Darth Vader should be an important individual in the Star Wars universe. The fact that he's barely appeared outside the two Force Unleashed games likely makes you question whether he and the series he features are a part of the Star Wars canon?

Is The Force Unleashed Canon?

Is The Force Unleashed canon? The simple answer is no, but it's a little more complicated than that. When the game originally came out, Disney didn't yet own the rights to the Star Wars franchise. So, while the title wasn't a part of the main canon, it was in the Expanded Universe.

At that time, the EU had an interesting relationship with the Star Wars universe. While things weren't technically in the same canon as the movies, they were close to it. And most things were made specifically not to contradict the original trilogy or the prequels.

Things have changed now as Disney has transformed the Expanded Universe into Star Wars Legends. And everything in Legends is decidedly non-canon, including The Force Unleashed and its sequel.

Where It Would Fit Into The Star Wars Timeline?

If Starkiller's story was canon, it would have to take place after the events of Revenge of The Sith. This explains the existence of Darth Vader and the Sith's growing control over the galaxy. It can't occur too long after Episode Three as Luke Skywalker is still nowhere to be seen - beyond his inclusion in one of the Ultimate Sith Edition's what-if scenarios.

The main canon hasn't significantly explored this period after the prequels. So, Disney could bring some elements of The Force Unleashed into the new movies and original series. For instance, Starkiller could make an appearance - albeit they may have to lower his ridiculous power level. They've done the same for other Legends content, so it isn't impossible. We'll just have to see where the story goes next.
