As far as licensed games go, few franchises have the back-to-back quality like Star Wars does. With a universe as expansive and fascinating as this one, it seems there's an endless amount of ways gamers can role-play in a galaxy far, far away.

Unfortunately, the publisher of many of these classic titles, LucasArts, has met a dramatically reduced role circa the Disney acquisition. However, with the recent restructuring of all future Star Wars games under the revitalized banner of LucasFilm Games, there are a number of titles that may be ripe for remakes if the demand is there.

10 Dark Forces

The Dark Forces series remains one of the most enduring of Star Wars' legacy shooters. Throughout most of them, you take on the role of Kyle Katarn, a grizzled rebel spy who finds himself flung through the galaxy on all manner of adventures, eventually learning of his Force sensitivity and becoming a Jedi.

The combination of hack-and-slash-meets-Doom-like FPS makes the Dark Forces games a delight to play. Beyond that, Dark Forces has a healthy helping of fascinating world-building that fleshes out the post-Jedi Legends era in a way not many other pieces of Star Wars media do. An HD makeover would be just what's needed to give the franchise a new start.

9 Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

The period between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope is one of the most fascinating periods in Star Wars lore, not least of which because of a newly-minted Darth Vader and his slew of disposable apprentices. The Force Unleashed focuses on one such apprentice, a deadly assassin known only as Starkiller.

In The Force Unleashed, you and your crew traverse across the galaxy, executing threats to both the Empire and to Vader's own goals. Through these adventures, Starkiller learns countless incredible Force techniques that make slicing through the scores of troopers and discovering secrets in these fleshed out levels impossibly fun. Though it may have been limited by technology in its time, the scope of this game demands an upheaval so we can experience the awesomeness of playing as this legendary Sith apprentice.

8 Star Wars: Battlefront

Okay. Yes. Star Wars: Battlefront has been remade. Yes, the remake and its sequel are quite the fantastic set of games in their own right. However, for all the greatness of both of these games, there are still so many aspects of the originals yet to be brought to current-gen consoles.

Where is the seamless combination of naval supremacy and sprawling ground battles in the Galactic Conquest mode? Where are the sophisticated co-op Instant Action features that let you play with a pal on the couch? Or the near-seamless ground-to-space battle transitions of Elite Squadron? For the wonders of the new games, they could certainly benefit from having another next-gen pass.

7 Star Wars: Bounty Hunter

Mando-mania is at an all-time high with the meteoric success of The Mandalorian. Therefore, Disney has absolutely nothing to lose by remaking one of their more inventive third-person adventure games with Star Wars: Bounty Hunter.

In this game you play as Jango Fett, master bounty hunter tasked with hunting down a dark Jedi by Darth Sidious. You're armed with blasters, flamethrowers, and a jet pack; seems like the only thing you don't have is, sadly, one Baby Yoda. Perhaps an HD remake can remedy this egregious oversight, though if not, there's always mods.

6 Masters Of Teräs Käsi

It may be a mystery precisely why those umlauts are over the letters in the title, but there's no mystery in the fact that Star Wars has a blockbustingly large roster of impressive and powerful characters. So why not put them all in a ring and make 'em fight each other, Mortal Kombat style?

Masters of Teräs Käsi fulfilled this particular wish, allowing you to duke it out against a computer or a friend playing as Luke, Leia, Han, and Vader. Now in 2021, there is no shortage of new characters that would be instant fan favorites to add to the game, such as Din Djarin, Ahsoka Tano, or Kylo Ren.

5 Empire At War

For a franchise as much about diplomacy and politics as it is about combat and space wizardry, the Star Wars video game scene is somewhat bereft of a sprawling military strategy game on a scale akin to Civilization. Empire at War, a real-time strategy game developed by Petroglyph, may be able to scratch that itch.

In Empire at War, the player can take command of either the Empire or the Rebellion, commanding units across the star system for galactic supremacy. It's a deep, layered challenge, and it can even be played with friends online! Though it maintains a dedicated cult fanbase, an overhaul with new graphics and updated systems could only improve upon this game.

4 Republic Commando

If you've ever seen either Clone Wars TV show, chances are you know just how intense and brutal the battles of the Clone Wars can be. Star Wars: Republic Commando is one of few first-person shooter games of the Legends era that sought to display that brutality in full force. Despite a scant few questionable design choices, this game still holds up as one of the most prescient depictions of war to be found in any piece Star Wars media.

A remake with all the violence of modern-day shooters, with styling inspired by Spec-Ops: The Line, would truly be a match made in heaven. There even was a planned sequel that never wound up getting made. Some of those ideas could find their way into this remake if Lucasfilm Games ever wants to open up the old vault again.

3 Star Wars: Racer

Yes, it's all about that Millennium Falcon, the X-Wing, Slave One, and any number of starships that make Star Wars what it is. That said, from swoop bikes to podracers, there is no shortage of stylish ground-based vehicles that could make a Racer reboot into a thing of beauty.

An F-Zero styled land-based racing game could be an unexpected hit if the publisher ever chose to remake these games. The high-velocity stunts that might be achieved by today's fame technology would be legendary, and they could make this group of games prime candidates for a reboot.

2 Star Wars Galaxies

While Star Wars: The Old Republic remains the last bastion of online Legends content still receiving updates, few remember its predecessor, Star Wars Galaxies. Another subscription-based MMO, this absolutely massive game boasted an impressive 32 classes, from pilots and commandos to artisans and dancers.

Despite its staggering initial success, a failed update to the progression system of Galaxies caused a large amount of controversy and may have been a significant factor in its cancellation circa 2011. Could a current-day reboot be able to compete with The Old Republic? Perhaps the only way to find out is to try it ourselves.

1 Knights Of The Old Republic

Knights of the Old Republic, player character doing a sith lightning blast

No list of the greatest Star Wars games ever would be complete without Knights of the Old Republic. With a sprawling storyline, a layered battle and morality system, and bountiful amounts of side quests and environments, both this Bioware masterpiece and its sequel have managed to crawl up from merely being good Star Wars games, and into the realm of the greatest and most influential games of all time. Had a sequel been made, it would almost certainly have entered those hallowed halls as well.

Players can and do revisit these games even today. Still, considering KOTOR released in 2003, it is beginning to show its age. A next-gen revamp can give this game true open-world functionality for its several visitable planets, an overhauled battle system, and even more side quests and layered story development. In the post-The Witcher 3 world we currently live in, Knights of the Old Republic deserves nothing less.
