Sony kicked off its PlayStation Showcase 2021 with a teaser trailer for a Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic Remake. Rumored to be in development for months now, it seems Aspyr will be heading development of the title for an unspecified date in the future. Launching as a timed exclusive on PlayStation 5 (confirmed by Jeff Grubb), the render of Darth Revan looks pretty incredible, though the lighting sort of made him look like Kylo Ren.

During the aftershow for today's showcase, additional details about the remake were revealed. This title will be a ground-up remake built on new technology versus an elaborate remaster. As was probably evident from the title, KOTOR Remake will feature massively overhauled visuals that may sport a new art style. As far as gameplay is concerned, some of the old KOTOR devs have returned to lend their hand in development. There will also be industry veterans from other fan-favorite RPG franchises, though specifics weren't named.

If Aspyr sounds familiar to you, the company recently made waves for porting various Star Wars titles to current-generation platforms. It had a hand in revitalizing the Jedi Knight series and bringing Star Wars Podracer back from the dead. The company goes way back with the brand having helped port various Star Wars titles to Mac, among others.

This will be the first original project the studio has tackled, even if it is technically a remake. Without a hint of footage, we can only infer what to expect here. I would be happy with simply having the game on modern consoles, but I'll happily take modern visuals with classic turn-based RPG action.
