Responsibility for the upcoming Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake has now changed hands, passing from Aspyr Media to Saber Interactive. The highly anticipated game has long been rumored to be in a troubled stage of development with no release date currently in sight. The news comes from journalist at Bloomberg Jason Schreier. “The highly anticipated Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake has been moved from Texas based Aspyr Media to a Saber Interactive studio in Eastern Europe,” Schreier pointed out on Twitter. “Parent company Embracer hinted at the transition last week and Bloomberg News can confirm it today.”RELATED: Star Wars KOTOR 2 Deserves Better Than A Dodgy Switch PortSaber Interactive was previously contracted by Embracer to help create the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic Remake. “Aspyr has gone full in to make this the best game that they can make," Board of Directors Member at Embracer Matthew Karch noted back in May. "When we acquired Aspyr, we knew from the start that they would require our assistance. Saber has tremendous expertise in creating these types of products. We've done it on Halo, on multiple Halo products, so we've been spending a lot of time working with them to bring this title over."Aspyr is known for several different remakes and remasters including Star Wars: Jedi Knight - Jedi Academy, Star Wars: Republic Commando, and Star Wars: The Force Unleashed. Similar to Aspyr, Saber Interactive has plenty of experience with remakes and remasters, helping to create Halo: The Master Chief Collection and Crysis Remastered. The company was acquired by Embracer back in 2020.

When it came to a release date, Karch was reluctant to provide a launch window, noting the depth of complexity involved. This appears to have been more than even he expected. "We're fully confident that the game is going to be fantastic, but it's a massive, massive product and massive products require a lot of effort and a lot of time to make good,” the executive remarked at the time. “And especially when you're talking about a game already old, very old, we've basically had to remake that game from scratch.”
