Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 2 - The Sith Lords is an absolute mouthful of a title, but it's also one of the best Star Wars games out there. The criminally underrated sequel to the first Kotor game recently got a new lease on life, launching on Nintendo Switch on June 8. What was even more surprising though was the news that the popular restored content mod would be added as DLC, enabling fans to experience the game as the devs intended.
However, if you were planning on playing through with the DLC, you won't want to start the game just yet. Publisher Aspyr has just confirmed that the restored content mod will not be compatible with base game save files, and will require a fresh save to start playing. This means that anyone who has already got stuck into the game will have to start over when the DLC launches, although it's still not clear when this will be.
As just confirmed by the publisher, anyone who downloads the DLC will have to disable it if they want to access their old save files. While the DLC is enabled, you will only be able to access save files that have used the additional content since the start.
While this may sound odd compared to other games that have post-launch DLC, this does make sense in the context of the restored content mod. Due to the ridiculously short development time developer Obsidian was given for the original release, much of what the team wanted to implement was left on the cutting room floor. This mod restores pretty much all of it, ranging from completely new areas and conversations, entire story arcs, and most importantly, a proper ending. It would be pretty hard to keep turning this content on and off, so it stands to reason that it will require a fresh save.
Right now, it's not known when the DLC will launch. Aspyr has simply said it is "coming soon", and will be with us before the end of Q3 2022. The DLC will be free, and will rework much of the base game.
