Prior to Disney's acquisition of the Star Wars franchise, there was a spanning network of content known as the Extended Universe. It was incredibly impressive and notable because all of it, from TV shows to comics to novels, was considered canon. When Disney decided to make the sequels, the Extended Universe was rendered non-canon and retitled as 'Legends' content.

This list includes all the best characters from the Legends stories that we think should be added to the new Star Wars canon. Some of them have stories that are wrapped up in the lore of Legends pretty tightly, but that doesn't mean they couldn't serve a new purpose as interesting characters in this alternate universe. If they can do it for Thrawn, they can do it for these other stars.

Starkiller

Starkiller brings down a Star Destroyer behind him in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed.

Galen Marek, also known as Starkiller, was a force-sensitive human who was trained by Darth Vader. He featured in Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, a video game that quickly became a fan favorite. Starkiller was taken on as an apprentice by Vader in secret, raising him from childhood and training him to be his personal assassin.

The Rule of Two means that there can only ever be two Sith: a master and apprentice. That's why Vader had to train Starkiller in secret. Starkiller grew up wishing to be a true Sith, aspiring to help Vader overturn Darth Sidious and adhere to the Rule of Two.

Vader ordered Starkiller to hunt down the remaining Jedi and eliminate them, but, in modern canon, the Inquisitors have taken on that role. Still, it would be cool to see Starkiller again - maybe even as an Inquisitor himself!

Nomi Sunrider

Star Wars - prophecy about Nomi Sunrider

Nomi Sunrider was an ancient Jedi Master. Most people know her from the Tales of the Jedi comics, but she has appeared in a number of other works. She lived in the early years of the Galactic Republic. For most of her life, Nomi wasn't a Jedi. However, she eventually married a Jedi Knight in training, Andur Sunrider, and had a daughter with her, named Vima. When Andur was ambushed and murdered by gang members, Nomi was forced to pick up Andur's lightsaber and defend herself.

She went on to train under the Jedi who Andur was traveling to see, Master Thon, and become a Grand Master Jedi so legendary that they were still telling stories about her in Anakin and Obi-Wan's day. Nomi's legacy would reverberate through Star Wars Legends through her daughter, Vima, and their descendants. Vima Da-Boda was the great-great-great-great granddaughter of Nomi and gave her lightsaber to Leia Organa Solo in the Dark Empire comics.

Tenel Ka Chume Ta' Djo

Star Wars - Tenel Ka

Her lightsaber is made out of a Rancor tooth. Enough said.

Tenel Ka was introduced in the Young Jedi Knights novels as a student at Luke's Jedi Academy on Yavin, alongside the nephew of Chewbacca, Lowbacca, and the children of Leia and Han, Jaina and Jacen.

She is half Hapan; that's a species from the Hapes Cluster that looks human from the outside (except they tend to be more attractive than the average human). Her father is the Hapan Prince. Her mother was human, a Dathomiri witch. Tenel Ka was raised equally in both parents' traditions: the politics of the matriarchal Hapan society and the ways of the Force practiced by Dathomir witches.

She went on to be a major figure in the galaxy and a powerful Jedi, though she was forced to give up the role to become Queen Mother of her planet. Tenel Ka would make an excellent, powerful, and complex female character for the Star Wars franchise, balancing the delicate nature of politics with her role as a Jedi. She's an example of a character who would need to be untied from her connections with Legends very carefully - as she falls in love with and has a child with Jacen Solo, who goes on to become Darth Caedus - but the effort would be worth it.

Revan

revan from star wars knights of the old republic

Now, we should start by saying that technically Revan does canonically exist in canon. However, they've never received the true attention he deserves because the game he appears in (Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic) is Legends. Revan only technically exists in canon due to a name-drop they received in the visual dictionary for The Rise of Skywalker movie.

Revan was a Jedi and a Sith who can be either a human male or female (depending on the player's choice - though you'll find most content refers to Revan as male). As they grew up in the Jedi order, eventually becoming a Jedi Knight, Revan started objecting to the fact that the Jedi wouldn't interfere in the Mandalorian Wars. Eventually, they took the matter into their own hands by rallying support and donning a Mandalorian mask to conceal their identity. When Revan and his friend Malak began to suspect that the Sith were somehow influencing the war, they investigated until they uncovered the Sith Empire and were turned to the dark side by its Emperor.

Revan's story is a twisting, turning web of lore, betrayal, and Force-hijinks. The perfect fodder for new Star Wars content.

Abeloth

Star Wars - Abeloth

Do you remember the Father, the Son, and the Daughter from the Clone Wars and Rebels television shows? They're the Mortis Gods who embody the Force itself: the Son as the dark side, the Daughter as the light side, and the Father mediating between them. However, did you know there was once a Mother, too?

Once upon a time, Abeloth was a force-sensitive member of an unknown species who was originally known as the Servant because she catered to the needs of the Father, the Son, and the Daughter. However, over time, she became a beloved member of their family and was known as the Mother. She was so successful that she was able to help the Son channel his anger into creative outlets.

Unfortunately, unlike the other members of her family, the Mother was still mortal. In her fear of losing her family, she drank from the Well of Power and bathed in the Pool of Knowledge, thus becoming capable of using the light and dark sides of the Force. While the Son drank from the Well of Power, and the Daughter bathed in the Pool of Knowledge, they were both immortal and could survive it. Abeloth, on the other hand, was twisted by it, physically, mentally, and spiritually. What she had desperately tried to avoid came true: her family subsequently fled the planet, abandoning her.

Mara Jade

Star Wars - mara jade on a stealth mission

Mara Jade is best known as Luke Skywalker's wife and the mother of their son, Ben. However, long before that, Mara was the Emperor's Hand: a position where she served him as a secret operative, a little like Starkiller did for Vader. Mara was trained in the dark side of the Force, as well as other critical combat techniques and stealth tactics. His final order to Mara was delivered after he had already died: she was to kill Luke Skywalker.

Mara is obviously a character who would need to be untied from Luke Skywalker a little bit in order to appear in modern canon, since it's never mentioned that Luke was married or had children. However, that doesn't mean that she couldn't appear in her past life as the Emperor's Hand, assassinating politicians, attacking rebel forces, and growing up in the care of a Sith Lord.
