Luke Skywalker has shaped so many lives out there that not only people from this generation, but some born in the late-1950s, will label Luke as their hero. The character’s heroic nature resulted in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope becoming a smash hit and on its way to the then-highest-grossing film of all time. Loads of youngsters in the 1970s had Luke as their unquestionable hero and looked to Star Wars for life lessons learned. Luke’s presence stayed strong until 2015, when he’d last been since onscreen thirty-two years previously.

With the Sequel trilogy starting with Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens, Luke’s popularity continued as a generation far different from the 1970s’ one had new stories to watch him in. Although he had no role in Episode VII, The Last Jedi had him in a pivotal role, one that would be remembered for years to come. Star Wars: Episode IX will close out the series for now and Luke is confirmed to be making an appearance in some form.

As technology has developed and we’ve gotten new ways to access Star Wars films, the scrutiny behind Luke’s past and abilities has increased. We know more about him now from rewatching the older movies than anyone did back then. With the Sequel trilogy offering us more material, the landscape has been set for us to find things about Luke that aren’t so obvious.

Here are 20 Strange Things About Luke Skywalker’s Anatomy.

20 Abandoning Jedi Ways

via geektyrant.com

In Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, Luke did the unthinkable by shunning the Jedi mentality. The epic ending of the previous film’s continuation was shown to be Luke tossing away the coveted lightsaber Rey handed to him.

Throughout this movie, Luke would defy Rey at every turn and refuse to accept the Jedi manner of thinking that Obi Wan and Yoda had relayed to him. This was all too out of character and something the fans weren’t okay with. The Luke we had seen in the Original trilogy was hardly like this.

19 Suddenly Having Love For Darth Vader

via imgur.com

After his confrontation with Darth Vader in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, Luke escaped his father’s clutches and regrouped with his friends so as to launch a final attack on the dark side.

However, in the very next film – which didn’t start off too far in the future – Luke already harbors considerable love for his father. Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi had Luke appealing to Darth Vader to return to being the good man he once was. But all this love came out of nowhere, with Luke outright refusing to fight his father.

18 Suddenly Knowing Darth Vader Was His Father

via youtube.com

Yes, we know Darth Vader was the one who appealed to Luke and informed him that “No! I am your father,” but Luke didn’t take Darth Vader’s word for it. The reason why Luke believed Darth Vader was because he “searched his feelings” to find out the validity to Darth Vader’s claims.

But at that point, Luke was hardly the Master Jedi he would become much later in the future, then how did he so expertly search his feelings that he instantly knew Darth Vader actually was his parent?

17 Suddenly Knowing Leia Can Tell She’s His Sister

via comicbook.com

Leia’s Force powers were never clear. In Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi, Leia reaches out toward the ship she was blasted from using the Force and rescues herself from deep space, but she’s not supposed to be a Jedi.

Even more impressive was how she quickly gained these powers.

In Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, Luke implored upon Leia to (again) “search her feelings," which was enough for her to find out she was his sister. But how could Luke be so certain she could do that if he was the Jedi and not her?

16 Being Attracted To Leia At First

via cnet.com

Now that’s something you really can never live down. In Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Luke showed signs of a crush on the beautiful princess and this was slightly expanded upon in Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back.

In one very notable scene, Leia planted a kiss on Luke’s lips to make Han Solo jealous, and Luke responded with enthusiasm. He was clearly attracted to her at that point before the story shifted and they were revealed to be siblings. Let’s hope he was able to live down his earlier attraction to his own sister.

15 Weird Deleted Scene With Leia

via youtube.com

George Lucas isn’t the kind of visionary Star Wars nerds like to make him out to be. George hadn’t planned a bunch of plot points for the films until late into production and the pivotal reveal that Luke and Leia were siblings wasn’t planned even while Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back was being filmed.

This meant that a deleted scene where Luke and Leia were clearly very into each other had been filmed. Armed with the knowledge that they’re siblings, this scene is cringeworthy as it has both people almost leaning in for a kiss.

14 Why Did His Arm Also Disappear With Him?

via newsweek.com

Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi featured the passing of the biggest legend in geek culture. Luke Skywalker met his end after being incredibly exhausted due to sending his force projection across the stars toward Kylo Ren. After Luke had duped Kylo Ren long enough for the brat to believe he had genuinely been there, Luke revealed the deception and faded away.

His actual body was wracked with pain and after viewing the sunset one last time, he vanished into the Force. But how come his metallic arm did the same? That was just a prosthetic, which should’ve remained back in the physical world.

13 Appearing As Younger Version In Force Projection

via comicbook.com

Since we’re talking about things that are weird about Luke rather than wrong about him, we can include a point that has been addressed. When Luke sends his projection to distract Kylo Ren, he appears much younger than the one we saw with Rey.

This was supposed to be due to Luke projecting the version of himself Kylo Ren was familiar with.

Appearing like this made the Sith mistake Luke to be genuinely present and moved his focus away from the Resistance. Still, seeing a Luke with shorter and darker hair certainly was weird so late into the movie.

12 Training So Quickly

via starwars.com

In Star Wars: Episode V – The Empire Strikes Back, Luke tracks down the old Master Yoda and begins training in the art of the Force. At first, he doesn’t do so great before he displays some great skills in it. Although Luke was shown to be a competent student, he didn’t complete his training before heading off to face Darth Vader.

However, Luke was far from out of his league and looked as if he had been training for at least a couple years based on his performance. It doesn’t seem believable he could’ve progressed that well in just a few days.

11 Training Rey Within A Couple Days

via disney.wikia.com

Just like he had absconded from his training under Yoda, Rey pulled a similar move in Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi by moving onto assisting Kylo Ren against Supreme Leader Snoke. Also similar to Luke’s circumstances was how quickly Rey completed her training.

She had a few hiccups before finding her footing and displaying immense talent in the Force, so much so that she and Kylo Ren could communicate stars apart. Luke didn’t apart such priceless wisdom that Rey could do the things she did, but such was what the film wanted us to believe.

10 How Did He Learn Commandeering?

via aminoapps.com

In Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Luke takes matters into his own hands and commandeers an X-Wing in order to get to the fragile point of the Death Star and blow it to smithereens. He’s ultimately successful in his mission and carries out the deed himself.

But we saw him at the beginning of the film as a lowly farmboy on a distant planet, one where he definitely didn’t have many extravagant ships to practice with. So how did he know how to fly so well?

9 Why Didn’t He Care For His Aunt And Uncle?

via aminoapps.com

In the very end of Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, Luke was taken in by his uncle after the passing of his mother and his father being a maniac bent on destroying the galaxy. He was raised basically from birth to the beginning of Episode IV by his aunt and uncle and should’ve seen them as his parent figures.

After both his aunt and uncle were lasered to their ends by Stormtroopers, Luke quickly recovers and goes on his quest. The fact that he spared hardly any thought for people who were basically his parents is something that’s extremely weird.

8 Being Credited As Main Star In Episode VII

via disney.wikia.com

The hype was enormous for Star Wars: Episode VII – The Force Awakens as it would see the return on Luke, Han, and Leia after thirty-two years. All of the promotion for the film was done by the main cast, including Mark Hamil, but Luke was mysteriously missing from all trailers.

As we found out, Luke was only in the film for about half a minute, then his star billing being second only to Harrison Ford isn’t right. There’s no way anyone could spin the situation to justify him as a major character in the film

7 Is He The Title Character?

via forbes.com

In Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, it was left ambiguous who the title was referring to. On one hand, you could argue that the film’s Resistance rising to the Dark side meant that the Jedi force was returning, but it could also refer to Luke himself.

The same way, The Last Jedi is also ambiguous whether Luke is supposed to be the last of the Jedi. By this film, Rey had also been turned into a Jedi and some children in the galaxy showed Jedi powers as well, but we don’t know for sure.

6 He Doesn’t Have A Grandfather

via galacticbasic.net

Okay, he actually does have one grandfather as people are supposed to have two pairs of grandparents, but from his father’s side, Luke doesn’t have a grandfather. Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace had established that Anakin Skywalker had no father and that he was a child of the Force.

Although Luke was produced the conventional way, his family still misses the spot of a paternal grandfather, making him the first being to have only three grandparents.

5 No Damage From Palpatine

via quora.com

During the climactic battle with Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars: Episode VI – The Empire Strikes Back, Luke is shown just how horribly outmatched he was. Darth Sidious has complete control of the encounter and Luke had nothing to throw at him. Ultimately Darth Vader intervened and flung Darth Sidious to his doom.

Before that, Luke had been in the process of being struck horribly by Force lightning. He was supposed to be inches from his end, but after Palpatine perished Luke showed no signs of pain or any wounds at all for that matter.

4 Clothes Change Color

via player.one

You might have noticed that in Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, Luke’s color scheme was much brighter than in later movies. In that installment, his role was to play a wide-eyed adventurer plucked out from obscurity. In Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, however, his clothing went a major revamp.

Now, Luke was clad in entirely dark attire.

This was done to symbolize his turn toward a more serious manner of thinking. While he didn’t go to the dark side, his personality certainly became darker.

3 His Fatal Flaw

via youtube.com

He may have been placed as the lead character of all of Star Wars, but this doesn’t exempt Luke from having flaws of his own. Luke’s main problem had always been the over-reliance he placed on future events. When he was a farmboy, he would dream of a future where he’d be out in the galaxy, thereby ruining his childhood with these far-off dreams.

After the first war ended, Luke’s fears of Ben Solo turning into the dark side was what ultimately made him consider taking the boy’s life and triggering the events of the Sequel trilogy.

2 A Sith Family

via coffeewithkenobi.com

The main Star Wars series has been about the Skywalker family. The weird thing is that for the majority of the series the Skywalker family has been associated with the Sith. Anakin Skywalker’s trilogy comprised of his turn toward becoming a Sith, while the Sequel trilogy has been about Ben Solo being a Sith as well.

Luke has been the only male in the three generations to purely be a Jedi. While Darth Vader became a Jedi in his final moments, it remains to be seen what will become of Kylo Ren.

1 Remembering Mom

via bustle.com

As mentioned earlier, Luke somehow knew that Leia could project her Force abilities to search her feelings and realize Luke was her brother. However, how he got Leia to find out that their mother had a certain sadness to her is something unexplainable.

In Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith, we saw the newborn Skywalker children being separated and their mother perishing after giving birth; then how could Luke or Leia possibly recall how their mother had been like?
