Stardew Valley, one of the best, most successful indie games ever made, was created entirely by one developer: Eric Barone. Not only did he make the game, sounds, art, and everything else himself, he's supported the title with significant updates since launch, despite the game selling so well that it's changed his life.

Barone is currently working on Stardew Valley update 1.5, which adds some new story content - a mysterious door in the fishing tackle shop - and... let me check the notes... erm, bananas.

Speaking to GameInformer, Barone said that he doesn't think this update will be the end for Stardew Valley. But what could that mean? Another big update? A sequel? He's not quite sure just yet.

"I’m not willing to commit to Stardew Valley 1.6," Barone said. "I will say that I definitely love Stardew Valley. I love it as a world and a universe. I don’t think [1.5] will be the end of Stardew Valley. I would not be surprised if there’s another Stardew Valley update, or multiple updates, or a Stardew Valley 2. Who knows?"

Unfortunately, Stardew Valley 2 isn't currently in the works, though it's good that it's not being ruled out. Barone specifically stated that there will be "a next step" for Stardew Valley - he's just not sure what that is. In the meantime, he's working on "a couple" of new solo projects.

Stardew Valley's creator also explained why he keeps adding stuff to the game, despite its success. It sounds like a cliche, but he says he does it for the fans. I believe him. It's a game that started out as a passion project for a game developer who wanted something like Harvest Moon on PC. At the time, he didn't know just how many people wanted the same thing, and now he's trying to pay something back to the people who fell in love with the world he created.

“It wasn’t until the game came out and most people loved it that I was like, ‘Okay, I guess the game is actually good,’ but that’s kind of how I am,” Barone said. “I always have doubt about whether it’s good. I always think it’s bad. But I actually think that is a tool to my benefit because it compels me to always go above and beyond and keep trying. I want it to be perfect, because I always feel like it’s not good enough.”
