Every season in Stardew Valley brings a new variety of crops and foraged items. One of these seasonal items is the fiddlehead fern. This curly green item doesn't sell for much, but it can be hard to find when you first start on your farm.
Fiddlehead fern is categorized as both a vegetable and a foraged item. Because of this, you will receive benefits from both farming and foraging professions. For example, the Tiller profession will boost the price, while the Botanist profession will guarantee that you forage an iridium quality fiddlehead fern. In this guide, we are going to go over everywhere you can find fiddlehead ferns, as well as what to do with them.
Fiddlehead Fern Locations
There are four main ways to get fiddlehead fern. Below, you can find each location.
Secret Woods
During the Summer, you will have a 78 percent chance to find fiddlehead ferns in the Secret Woods. This is an area in the north of Cindersap Forest that will become accessible once you have a steel axe. For more information on the Secret Woods, be sure to check out this guide.
Skull Cavern
Fiddlehead ferns will appear in the Prehistoric floors of the Skull Cavern. These are floors that contain Pepper Rex, Mutant Flies, and Iridium Bats.
Prehistoric floors aren't that common. After you reach floor 6 of Skull Cavern, there is around a 2 percent chance that you will find a Prehistoric floor.
Ginger Island Jungle
Once you have unlocked Ginger Island, you can find fiddlehead ferns in the Jungle area. This area is accessible through the upper righthand side of the main beach where Willy's boat is.
Fiddlehead ferns will spawn on the ground, along with clumps of weeds. You can also find Leo's hut and the Banana Shrine here.
Traveling Merchant
Lastly, you can find fiddlehead ferns from the traveling merchant. This is a vendor that appears in the north part of the Cindersap Forest every Friday and Sunday.
On these days, the merchant has a chance to sell one fiddlehead fern for 270-1,000 gold.

Fiddlehead fern only has a few uses. First, it is required for the Chef's Bundle in the Community Center. If you chose to have bundles remixed, then fiddlehead fern is used in the Wild Medicine Bundle.
This foraged item is only used in one recipe. Fiddlehead Risotto requires one oil, one garlic, and one fiddlehead fern. The recipe for this meal can be learned from The Queen of Sauce episode that airs on Fall 28 of the second year. Lastly, using a fiddlehead fern at a sewing machine with a cloth will create green overalls.
That's all there is to know about the fiddlehead fern. Now get out there and start foraging.
