Raising farm animals is an important part of life in Stardew Valley. In addition to growing seasonal crops to make money, you'll probably sell animal products. There are several different animals available in the game, as well as even more items that they produce. One of these animals is the duck, which will produce duck eggs and feathers.

In this guide, we are going to go over everything you need to know about duck feathers, including how to get them and what you can do with them. Although they come from ducks, they are not as common as eggs, so it can be a bit confusing if you are trying to get a feather for the first time.

How To Get A Duck

Ducks are a coop animal that unlock after you have a Big Coop. This is the second coop upgrade, meaning that you will need to have the basic coop already built. Below, you can see the required materials to make both of these coops.

Coop Type

Materials Needed

Cost To Build

Coop

300 Wood 100 Stone

4,000g

Big Coop

400 Wood 150 Stone

10,000g

If you don't have a coop yet, this will require a lot of materials. Fortunately, you can check out our guides on how to farm both wood and stone.

With the Big Coop built, you can head over to Marnie's Ranch and buy a duck for 1,200g. Your new duck will live in your coop, and take about five days to mature into an adult.

If you already have a duck, you can incubate their egg to produce another duck. Incubators are included in both the Big and Deluxe Coops and will take around six days to hatch a duck.

Finding A Duck Feather

Every day, you will have a chance to increase your friendship with your duck. The easiest way to do this is by petting them; interacting with the duck again after petting them will display a menu with the current friendship level. Each of these friendship hearts represents 200 friendship points, with a total of 1,000 possible points.

Ducks have a higher chance to produce duck feathers with more friendship points. Additionally, as the friendship points increase, the feathers will become higher quality and you can sell them for more money. Below, you can check out some ways to increase and maintain your friendship points.

  • Feed Your Duck Daily
  • Allow Them To Graze Outside
  • Pet Them Daily
  • Don't Leave Them Outside Overnight

Overall, you need to increase your friendship with a duck for them to produce feathers. If a duck feather is produced, it will replace the egg that they lay every two days.

It's important to keep in mind that luck will not influence the chance of duck feathers appearing.

Traveling Merchant

Duck feathers can also be purchased from the Traveling Merchant. This is a merchant who will appear in the top part of the Cindersap Forest on Fridays and Sundays.

This merchant has a wide variety of rotating goods for sale. When you visit the Traveling Merchant, they will have a chance to sell one duck feather anywhere between 375g and 1,000g. This is a lot, but if you have enough money, then this is a great way to get one quickly.

From the sewing machine located in Emily and Haley's house, you can also make clothing with a duck feather. By combining the feather and a piece of wool in the machine, you will create the Lime Green Striped Shirt.

Gifting Duck Feathers

Duck feathers make an okay gift; Elliot and Leo love to receive them, while Harvey likes them. Every other villager is either neutral or hates the feathers though.

Overall, duck feathers are an easy way to boost your friendship with Elliot, Leo, and Harvey.

That's all there is to know about duck feathers. Be sure to pet your ducks every day and make sure that they have enough food. If you want even more ducks, you can also build a second Big Coop!
