There are tons of trees that you can plant around the world of Stardew Valley. A few of these tree types, such as maple and oak, will naturally spawn on your farm at the beginning of a game. Other trees, such as apple and cherry trees, need to be planted with saplings, which are typically purchased at Pierre's General Store or JojaMart.

One of the trees that may be a little more difficult to plant is the mahogany tree. This tree was first introduced with the Ginger Island update and grows from mahogany seeds. In this guide, we are going to go over how to get these seeds and grow your own mahogany tree. First, let's take a look at what items you can get from mahogany trees.

Updated August 18, 2023 by Jacqueline Zalace: Mahogany trees are still one of the best sources of hardwood in Stardew Valley. We've updated the formatting of this a little, and added a bit more information to help you quickly find mahogany seeds and get to farming.

What Do Mahogany Trees Produce?

Chopping down a mahogany tree will yield ten hardwood. Hardwood can be tough to come by, so planting mahogany trees around your farm is a great idea.

Additionally, if you place a tapper on the mahogany tree, it will produce sap every day.

Where To Find Mahogany Seeds

In total, there are five different ways to find mahogany seeds, so let's go over each one below.

Foraged Around Grown Mahogany Trees

Fully grown mahogany trees will have a chance to spread their seeds in the nearby area. When walking by a mahogany tree, look around for any partially buried seeds.

Using your axe or pickaxe will cause the seed to pop out of the ground, allowing you to collect it. The collected mahogany seeds will be orangish-yellow, with an oblong shape; overall, they look very different from every other tree seed and sapling.

Chopping Down Mahogany Trees

Chopping down a fully grown mahogany tree will have a good chance to also yield mahogany seeds. This means that if you have mahogany trees ready to be chopped down, you do not have to go searching for additional seeds.

Chopping Stumps

Stumps can be found on your farm or in the Secret Woods. Chopping a stump will yield two hardwood, and have a ten percent chance of dropping a mahogany seed.

Each day, you will be able to chop six large stumps within the Secret Woods.

These stumps respawn, which means that, in addition to searching for mahogany seeds, you can build up your hardwood collection.

Slaying Slimes In The Secret Woods

While you are in the Secret Woods chopping stumps, you will also find the area occupied by a group of slimes. Slimes in this area will have a ten percent chance to drop a mahogany seed when slain. These slimes will also respawn in the Secret Woods each day.

Cracking Open A Golden Coconut

Lastly, you can find mahogany seeds inside golden coconuts. This is a geode-like item that can be found around Ginger Island. To crack these coconuts open, you will need to bring them to Clint, where he will open one for 25g.

A golden coconut will have a one in seven chance of containing a mahogany seed. Because golden coconuts are rare, this may not be the most efficient way to find mahogany seeds.

Overall, chopping down stumps and existing mahogany trees are the best ways to acquire seeds.

Where To Buy Mahogany Seeds

If you don't want to search for mahogany seeds, you can also purchase one from the Island Trader, a unique vendor on Ginger Island, in exchange for one stingray. This vendor will not be available right as you arrive on Ginger Island. You will first need to unlock the island farmhouse for 20 golden walnuts.

Afterward, you can head to the area directly north of the starting beach and unlock the trader for ten golden walnuts. Stingrays are a bit difficult to find. They can only be caught in the Pirate Cove area, which will need to be unlocked as well.

Overall, it may be a better option to forage for mahogany seeds instead of purchasing them.

Naturally Spawning Mahogany Trees

The only place that you can find naturally spawning mahogany trees is on Ginger Island.

When you first visit the island, you can find fully grown mahogany trees in the area directly north of the starting beach, as well as near the island farmhouse to the west. These are normal mahogany trees that still yield ten hardwood. Once chopped, you can plant more mahogany trees.

How To Grow Mahogany Trees

The growth rate of a mahogany tree varies, with five different stages. Stage one is a newly planted seed, while stage five is a fully grown tree that can be chopped down for the maximum yield.

Each night, a mahogany tree will have a 15 percent chance to enter the next growth stage. This isn't that great, but with tree fertilizer, you can increase this to 60 percent.
