Despite its appearance as a simple farming role-playing game, there are plenty of hidden quests and little details for you to uncover in this delightful game. There’s actually a lot of depth to it, and some of your choices have notable consequences. Read on for things you didn’t know you could do in the world of Stardew Valley.

Updated August 3, 2022 by Gabrielle Huston: Stardew Valley gets lots of updates, and players are uncovering brand new secrets all the time! We've added some secrets here you might have also missed, and provided extra details to make sure you can experience the wonderful whimsy of this world.

18 Get Into The Sewers

Stardew Valley Jas And Vincent Sewer

Sewer levels are pretty much mandatory in games nowadays. Just like underwater levels, they're a staple of many games. The sewers in Stardew Valley may be locked, but you can get into them once you've donated 60 items to the museum. The morning after you donate the 60th item, Gunther will greet you at home and gift you the key. So, you'd better get mining.

Inside, you'll be able to catch special fish in the murky waters, talk to the friendly monster named Krobus and buy his goods, interact with the Statue of Uncertainty if you want to change one of your professions, and enter the Mutant Bug Lair (once you get the 'Dark Talisman' quest from the Wizard).

17 Get A Blue Chicken

blue chickens in a coop

You've probably got both brown and white chickens, but did you know you can get a blue one? To get one, you need to see Shane's eight-heart event. Jas will take you to see Shane in a part of Marnie's house that's usually locked, where he is raising a flock of blue chickens.

After seeing the event, any chicken you buy from Marnie, or hatch out of a chicken egg (regardless of color), has a 25% chance of being blue. Shane is kind of an abrasive character, especially when you first meet him, so not many players get to know him well enough to see these special chickens!

16 Mod The Game

Stardew Valley mods

Clever fans are always hard at work modding their favorite games. If you think you've seen it all, befriended everyone, planted every crop, ventured down the deepest mine and traveled to the farthest reaches, you could always mod your game to add some new content.

There are loads of great mods out there, so get experimenting! They can offer new NPCs to interact with, change the game's aesthetic, add quests, expand on existing relationships, and much more!

15 Grow Giant Crops

split image with two farms that have giant crops

By now, you’ve probably planted every type of crop in the game. You’ve even got ahold of the Coffee Bean plant and the Sweet Gem Berry! But did you know that you can get giant crops?

If you have a 3x3 patch of fully-grown cauliflowers, melons, or pumpkins — as long as the middle one is watered — there’s a chance they’ll turn into a giant crop. And when you harvest them, they give you way more produce than a standard crop (anywhere between 15 and 21 yields). It's pretty cool, right? Plus you harvest them using your axe, which feels pretty awesome.

14 Put Mayor Lewis’ Underwear In Soup

purple shorts in marnie's room

Every summer, the Luau Festival comes around, and with it the chance to impress (or totally disgust) the governor. However, if you're up for a bit of fun, you can give him and Mayor Lewis the shock of their lives by putting in Lewis’s ‘lucky purple shorts.' Lewis asks you to find these for him in a quest near the start of the game, but you don't have to give them back to him just because you found them.

Once you’ve got the shorts from Marnie’s room, hold onto them until the Luau, put them in the soup, and watch the fantastic reactions. Marnie and Lewis are gobsmacked, and Lewis furiously rants at the town for this despicable prank. But no one will know it was you, so who cares? That's what he gets for asking you to fetch his so-called 'shorts'.

13 Get The Galaxy Sword, Hammer, and Dagger

player in desert area with the galaxy sword unlocked

The Galaxy Sword is one of the best weapons in the game, which means you'll definitely want it when you go down into the Skull Cavern. It isn't dropped by any monster or sold by the Adventurer's Guild, though! You need to make it yourself.

We say 'make,' but it's not a crafting recipe. To make the Galaxy Sword, you'll first need to acquire a Prismatic Shard. It can be pretty tricky, as its odds of dropping are less than five percent (sometimes less than one percent) from most sources, but we have another article with tips and tricks to help you get one. Once you have it, take it to the Calico Desert. Just above the vendor, there are three pillars topped with gold spheres. Hold the Prismatic Shard in your hand, walk into the circle created by these three pillars, and you'll magically receive the Galaxy Sword!

Once you've unlocked the Sword this way, the Galaxy Hammer and Galaxy Dagger will become purchasable at the Adventurer's Guild.

12 Be A Heartbreaker & Make Your Spouse Jealous

Stardew Valley - jealous spouse (sam) talking to the player

Some players take their relationships in the game very seriously, staying loyal to their sweethearts and trying to keep them happy. But, for some, a game like this is an opportunity for the kind of naughty fun you can't have in real life. To confess feelings for a character, you must give them a bouquet.

But, what you might not know is that you can actually give bouquets to every single eligible person in town at the same time. Not only that, but when you marry one, the rest will still be classified as boyfriends or girlfriends.

Be forewarned, though, that there is a jealousy mechanic. The following conditions must be met:

  • You are married
  • You give a gift to one of the other marriage candidates
  • That other marriage candidate has received a bouquet from you
  • That other marriage candidate is the same gender as your spouse
  • The gift you give is not hated by that other marriage candidate
  • It is not that other marriage candidate's birthday

If these conditions are met, your spouse can become jealous! Jealousy means a 30 point penalty in your relationship level and an angry message about your actions.

11 Collect Bizarre Statues

Stardew Valley - secret statutes

You may have noticed that some of the Lost Books you find are a little strange.

One of them, titled simply "???," is just a bunch of nonsensical words. However, the first letters of each word, put together, form three phrases. The second one, for example, is "DUCK MAYO SALOON." The meaning is more straightforward than you think: put each item inside a box in the matching location, and you’ll receive a reward.

What kind of reward, you might wonder? The weirdest statues in the game, of course. They look bizarre and come with names like "??Pinky Lemon??" and "??HMTGF??." They’ll add a sense of intrigue to your home, that’s for sure.

10 Unlock A Casino

player inside the casino

In the Backwoods you’ll have seen the Tunnel, but if you ventured inside, did you notice the panel hidden in the darkness? Place a battery-pack in it and you’ll see a note from someone named Mr. Qi. It's here that the quest begins. This Mr. Qi will ask you to put several things in different places (even the mayor’s fridge).

RELATED: Stardew Valley: A Complete List Of What You Can Donate To The Museum

It’s a fun addition to the game, and you never know what you’ll do next. Your reward for all this running around is access to the Casino in Calico Desert, where you can even meet Mr. Qi himself.

9 Find Secret Notes

the player views a secret note

As of the 1.3 update, players can find secret notes with the magnifying glass, following the 'A Winter Mystery' quest. Secret notes can hold all kinds of mysteries: the locations of hidden treasures, or the favorite items of a villager.

A cool example is Note #13, which tells you to check the bush above the playground at 12pm on the last day of the season. It’s pretty self-explanatory: on the 28th of any season, do as it says and you’ll find a cute little Junimo plush.

8 Run Joja Corp Out Of Town

Community Center Cutscene

You might think that JojaMart is a bit of an eyesore in Stardew Valley: a lone, clinical supermarket in the middle of the homely town, not to mention it threatens the local economy. Well, it turns out you can get rid of them once and for all.

To run JojaMart out of Stardew Valley, firstly, do not buy the membership from Morris. Unless that is, you want the community center to be destroyed, and Joja’s corporate claws to take hold of the town. Next, complete the community center bundles. If you do every single one, you’ll get a glorious cutscene where the townspeople fight back, and Morris and his Joja minions leave town forever.

7 Head To Ginger Island

ginger island stardew valley

As of the 1.5 update to Stardew Valley, Willy can give you a special quest. Once you've finished refurbishing the community center, Willy will tell you about an old boat he wants to fix up. Help him, and he'll take you to far away Ginger Island.

This is a huge new area that has an entire second farm for you to use. It'll be a lot of work (the island is full of puzzles, mysteries, and barriers) but it's a great place to go if you're a bit bored of the Valley.

6 Play Some Arcade Games

Stardew Valley - Stardrop Saloon's Arcade

Did you know that the bar in town has some arcade games that you can play? You may have noticed them there, but assumed they were just decorative. Games within games are always a neat addition.

If you're tired of farming or mining, why not play some games on your game? How meta. The bar is open until midnight, so you can play there after a hard day's work. Plus, if you want to marry Abigail, you can impress her with your Journey of the Prairie King skills.

5 Erase Your Spouse’s Memory

Stardew Valley - wedding (left), dark shrine of memory (right)

Alas, all is not always sunny in Stardew Valley. If you and your spouse just aren’t making it work anymore, you can divorce them. But maybe you aren’t content with breaking their heart once?

In the Witch’s Hut is the Dark Shrine of Memory, which, in exchange for 30,000g, erases your ex’s memories of marriage, making them believe it never happened. That is one hell of a plot twist. So if you really wanted to, you could do it all over again. And again. And again. Or, you know, you could just stick to farming peacefully.

4 Catch Legendary Fish

Stardew Valley - players holding Legendary Fish

You might have thought legendaries were only in Pokemon, but they’re actually in Stardew Valley, too. As described in one of the lost books, there are five legendary fish in the Stardew Valley: the Crimsonfish, Angler, Glacierfish, Mutant Carp, and the Legend.

RELATED: Stardew Valley: Who Is Yoba?

Excluding the Mutant Carp, which lives in the sewer year-round, there is one available in each season. They can only be caught once, and they require a high fishing skill – the Legend being the hardest with a required level of ten. They’re worth a ton of money, but you might prefer to keep them as trophies to show off your hard work. Go on, you’ve earned it.

3 Be Dumped By All The Bachelors/Bachelorettes Simultaneously

Stardew Valley - group ten-heart event

Remember how we said you could date other marriage candidates and still get married? Well, you can even take that one step further by dating all the bachelors or bachelorettes! If you do this, you'll get a special cutscene. It's gender-specific, so there are two versions of the cutscenes: one if you are dating all the bachelors, and one if you are dating all the bachelorettes.

First, choose if you want to pursue the bachelors or bachelorettes. Raise your friendship level with all of them, give them each a bouquet at friendship level eight, then get up to friendship level ten with all of them. Note that the game requires you to see all of their ten-heart events, too. Don't marry anyone.

Finally, if you were dating the bachelors, enter the Stardrop Saloon, and if you were dating the bachelorettes, enter Haley and Emily's house. All the marriage candidates you've been pursuing will be gathered there, ready to yell at you about the fact that you've been dating them all at once! Your dialogue choices can't save you. For one week after this cutscene, the bachelors/bachelorettes will ignore you, refuse gifts, and give angry responses if you try to talk to them.

There is one final hope, though. If you want to get away with your shenanigans without any consequences, make sure you have a Rabbit's Foot in your inventory before entering the appropriate building for the cutscene. Since Rabbits' Feet are traditionally considered lucky, you get an entirely different cutscene! If it's the bachelors, you just find them all playing pool together. If it's the bachelorettes, they're just chatting about Lewis and Marnie's romantic relationship.

2 Upgrade The Galaxy Weapons

player using the volcano forge

If you manage to reach the end of the Volcano Dungeon on Ginger Island, you'll be rewarded with access to a special Forge that allows you to enchant and upgrade items. You can do lots of cool things here, including upgrading your Galaxy weapons into Infinity weapons.

To craft an Infinity weapon, place the appropriate Galaxy weapon into the forge along with 60 Cinder Shards and 3 Galaxy Souls.

Galaxy Souls can be purchased for 40 Qi Gems each at the Vending Machine in Qi's Walnut Room

Kill 50 Dangerous Monsters (the new monster forms that appear when the Shrine of Challenge is on or the quests 'Danger in the Deep' or 'Skull Cavern Invasion' are active)

Galaxy Souls can drop from monsters in the Dangerous Mines

One of two quests is active: 'Skull Cavern Invasion' or 'Mr. Qi's Danger in the Deep'

1 Turn Your Children Into Doves

Stardew Valley - player and child (left), Dark Shrine of Selfishness (right)

There’s another shrine in the Witch’s Hut that can do some seriously messed up things. Are your pixilated children the bundles of joy you were hoping for, or do you crave the easy life from before they were around?

Offer the Dark Shrine of Selfishness a prismatic shard, and you can have that again. This shrine literally turns your kids into doves, and they fly away forever. This is a permanent change, so make sure you definitely want it.
