Starfield has a pretty involved character creation system that lets you customize your character exactly how you'd like, from their build to the color of their hair. You can also customize your personality and history by picking a Background and up to three traits.

While your character's background will dictate your starting skills and unlock gameplay options with broad strokes, your choice of traits helps you define your character's personality and backstory in a far more granular fashion. They all have their positives and negatives, and some of them are mutually exclusive - but don't worry. There are ways to remove any and all traits. You've just got to find them!

Increased dialogue options and occasionally better quest rewards for missions with the Freestar Collective.

Crime bounties toward other joinable factions are greatly increased.

Cannot be combined with Neon Street Rat or United Colonies Native.

Kid Stuff

Your parents will be available to visit during the game.

Two percent of the money you earn gets sent to them automatically.

United Colonies Native

You gain special dialogue options and better rewards for missions with the United Colonies.

Crime bounties toward other joinable factions are greatly increased.

Cannot be combined with Neon Street Rat or Freestar Collective Settler.

Neon Street Rat

You gain special dialogue options and better rewards while on Neon.

You will get higher bounties from other factions.

Cannot be combined with Freestar Collective Settler or United Colonies Native.

Hero Worshipped

An 'adoring fan' will join your crew and give you gifts.

The 'adoring fan' shows up often and jabbers at you incessantly.

Raised Enlightened

Gain access to a restocking chest of items at the House of the Enlightened, in New Atlantis.

You cannot access the Sanctum Universum's chest.

Cannot be combined with Raised Universal or Serpent's Embrace.

Raised Universal

Gain access to a restocking chest of items at the Sanctum Universum, in New Atlantis.

You cannot access the House of the Enlightened's chest.

Cannot be combined with Raised Enlightened or Serpent's Embrace.

Serpent's Embrace

Grav jumping provides a temporary boost to health and oxygen.

Health and oxygen are reduced if you don't grav jump relatively frequently.

Cannot be combined with Raised Universal or Raised Enlightened.

Spaced

Your health and oxygen increase while in space.

Your health and oxygen decrease on land.

Cannot be combined with Terra Firma.

Terra Firma

Your health and oxygen increase while on the surface.

Your health and oxygen decrease while in space.

Cannot be combined with Spaced.

Taskmaster

If you have crew trained in a certain ship system, that system will occasionally repair itself to full health when it dips under 50 percent.

All crew cost twice as much to hire.

You begin the game with a home on a peaceful planet.

You begin the game with a 125,000 credit mortgage.

Wanted

When your health is low, your damage output increases.

Armed mercenaries will occasionally show up trying to kill you.
