Everyone has pronouns, but not every game lets people use their own - we're seeing this change as representation betters but it's a slow crawl up a steep hill. Forza Horizon 5, for instance, lets you choose between he/him, she/her, and they/them. Starfield will do something similar.

"[I'm] really excited about what the team has done with the character creation here," Todd Howard stated in a Reddit AMA. "Including choosing background skills, etc., you [can] also pick your pronouns (he, she, they). We've recorded all the relevant dialogue to support that choice."

The answer was in response to someone asking Howard if character creation will be as in-depth as The Elder Scrolls series - based on his answer, it will be. When you've picked your pronouns, all characters from then on will use them. In previous Bethesda titles, be it Fallout or Skyrim, you can choose between 'man' or 'woman' but that's it. Given that we can pick pronouns here, it's likely that gender will be far less constrictive.

Starfield - via Bethesda

Starfield is Bethesda's priority right now, ahead of The Elder Scrolls 6 and Fallout 5. In fact, Fallout is the one being prioritized least which makes sense since the most recent outings were 4 and 76.

Nonetheless, all hands are on deck for this new IP which could pave the way for similar, inclusive changes to Bethesda's other flagships.

Starfield launches on November 11, 2022.
