Claiming a home base in State of Decay 2 allows you to upgrade the amount of space and the number of facilities your old base had. But claiming outposts is different. Outposts are riddled all over the map and have different benefits to them. These are claimed alongside your home base and you can own multiple outposts at once. Once you start doing quests and clearing out Plague Hearts, you won't have time to scour the map for precious resources. Or maybe you do, but you can't afford to drive all the way back to your home base. Outposts can help you out with both of these problems and more.
Updated August 1, 2021, by Sharnelle Earle: Though State of Decay 2 is around three years old, Undead Labs still works on keeping it up to date. In an update on July 21, 2021, new features have been added. These features make outposts even more beneficial than before. Outposts can now be upgraded to increase production for your community. This makes claiming outposts more beneficial gives you a reason to revisit them.
There are now Landmark Outposts. A Landmark Outpost is a new feature where there will be one special outpost per map that will provide you with multiple, powerful benefits to aid you in the way that you play. The negative effects of Plague Hearts have increased. Plague Hearts make any nearby outposts unfit to claim until the Plague Heart is destroyed. Plague Hearts will render entire neighborhoods infected and dangerous to explore instead of just one house. This means that not only will nearby outposts be unfit to claim, but the entire neighborhood will be filled with plague zombies.
Landmark Outposts
Landmark outposts allow players to pick one type of strategy and stick to it. If you play the game seriously, taking combat and skill into account more than leisure play, Landmark outposts may be for you. It's like building a facility station at your base. Once you purchase a Landmark outpost with 100 Influence, you're prompted to pick a "skill" or strategy.
The outpost will perform actions to help you out based on which strategy you choose. That help could be keeping survivors infection-free, keeping zombie hordes at bay, and farming for power. Each map has a dedicated Landmark outpost that will have different specialties. This makes some maps more worth going to than others, depending on how good their Landmark outpost is.

- The Providence Ridge Landmark outpost focuses on providing space for survivors. You can either provide more shelter or create a lounging outpost, both of which will provide your community with extra morale. The last option, Stronghold, takes a turn away from that idea and focuses on lowering the zombie threat.
- Drucker County's outpost provides more Meds for the community and increases all survivor's injury severity, maximum health, or infection resistance.
- The Meagher Valley Landmark outpost will provide base-wide power and a lower Influence cost than claiming a regular Power outpost. To keep the outpost running you can choose which resource you want to expend, Influence, people, or parts. Power will provide your community with a morale boost.
- Cascade Hill's Landmark outpost acts as a larger version of the facility station, Staging Area. This means that it will make all your base-building speed up and provide you with Materials. You can choose which resource to expend to keep the outpost running.
How To Claim An Outpost In State Of Decay 2
With the information shown from hovering over different icons on your map, you can see which buildings provide loot and which are possible outpost locations. Any outpost you find will list whether it's secure or not and as well as its potential base benefits. A secure outpost means there are no zombies in the area. To claim one, you must first clear out any zombies in it and approaching it. The next step is to find the red lantern that allows you to purchase the outpost with Influence points. By interacting with the lantern, the outpost menu will let you know how much Influence you need, how much you have, and what benefits the outpost will give you.
Collecting More Influence
Influence is earned in many different ways.
- Killing small elites, like Screamers and Bloaters, will give you five Influence.
- Killing hordes will give you ten Influence.
- Ferals and Juggernauts provide 25 and 50 Influence.
- Completing certain side quests for enclaves will give you 100 or more Influence.
- Clearing out infestations marked on the map will give you 20.
- Destroying Plague Hearts grant you 150 Influence.
- Bringing resource rucksacks home will give you five.
The Benefits Of Claiming Outposts In State Of Decay 2
Different outposts will give you different things. Some will offer the production of goods like Coffee for fatigue and a Water Supply. Water Supply facilities will send water to your entire base, raising the morale of your community. Outposts that produce things like water or fuel will take some resources from you every day to sustain the production, so you have to decide whether it's worth it for your community. Some benefits include:

- Beds

The smartest choice is to claim outposts for whatever your problem area is. If you're constantly low on Meds, find a free outpost that supplies some. If you don't have enough beds for your community, find an outpost that says it provides beds. You can always remove outposts by either going to the facility and interacting with the red lantern or by going into your Community menu. Find your Community menu by opening your Map and going through the above tabs. To the right of your screen will be all the outposts you own. From here, you can remove outposts without being anywhere near them. Outposts are an important part of keeping your community's morale high and supplying your base with crucial resources for staying alive and fighting. If your community is depressed, they will start fighting and wasting resources. Getting automatic supplies from outposts will help you with killing enemies and staying strong and stocked up on ammo.
How To Claim More Than Two Outposts In State Of Decay 2
When you first start your own community, you can only claim up to two outposts. This becomes very little very fast. The answer to getting more outposts is by upgrading your Command Center. At your home base, you can upgrade various different facilities so that you can craft more items and raise production levels. You can do this with the Command Center, too. The last option when interacting with your Command Center will allow you to upgrade to level two for a couple of Materials and the help of two survivors. This second upgrade allows you to claim one more outpost and gives you the ability to apply modifications to the facility. Mods can be found while looting and have various positive effects when equipped to a facility at your base. You can find Pallet mods, Water Cooler mods, and more.
- Pallets and Storage Unit mods will increase the number of resources you can store at a time.
- A Water Cooler provides water to your survivors, raising morale.
- A Generator mod will provide power to the room you apply it to.
- A Signal Antenna mod will allow an extra outpost to be claimed.
Each mod will only affect the one facility you equip it to. It will not work for the entire base. The third upgrade allows for one more outpost and the use of Drones. For the upgrade, along with workers and Materials, you need ten Scraps of Circuitry, Power, and Knowlege of Computers. You can get Power to your Command Center by equipping a Generator mod to it or by claiming a Power outpost. Knowledge of Computers is a skill book. People who have no skills slots left cannot learn from another skill book. Because of this, you may have to find and recruit a fresh survivor who can learn it for you. Only the person who has learned the Knowledge of Computers skill can upgrade the Command Center.
How To Find Facility Mods And Skill Books
When you open your map and hover over different buildings, they will tell you what Potential Resources can be looted from them. An icon that looks like a hammer inside a gear will mean there are facility upgrades or a skill book there. Look for buildings that have this Potential Resource icon and loot them to find mods and books. You can also purchase mods and books from traders and enclaves.
