Steam achievements are still being added to The Outer Worlds even though it won’t be out on the digital platform for another year.

Earlier this week, Epic’s Game Store claimed another exclusive title when The Outer Worlds went over to their side. Well, not entirely exclusive--the deal would The Outer Worlds on both Epic Game Store and the Windows Store at launch, and then other platforms one year later.

The latest RPG to come from Obsidian Entertainment is one of the most anticipated games of 2019. Obsidian rose to prominence thanks to games like Pillars of Eternity and Fallout: New Vegas, and people are expecting that same magic to be captured in their latest first-person sci-fi roleplaying game.

However, we’re not too sure if Obsidian got the memo that their latest game was going to be an Epic exclusive. Not hours before the announcement, Obsidian devs were still adding achievements to Steam, a move that wouldn’t be necessary for over a year at this point.

In fact, achievements are still being added. The latest update occurred early on March 22nd as of the time of this writing, several days after it was announced that The Outer Worlds wouldn’t release on Steam for some time to come.

It’s possible that the decision to go to Epic was done by the publisher, Private Division, and then not provided to Obsidian until very recently. It’s also possible that Obsidian simply has all the Steam achievements completed and has extra manpower to upload them to Steam’s servers now instead of later.

So far there’s been no comment from Obsidian beyond the announcement that they would be an Epic exclusive for one year. While the move is widely seen as controversial as Steam has many loyal adherents, you can’t fault Obsidian for looking for a greater slice of the pie thanks to Epic’s more generous revenue sharing.

So far, the Epic Game Store doesn’t support achievements, so if that’s an important part of your game, you’ll have to wait for it to arrive on Steam.
