Paradox Development Studio and Paradox Interactive recently announced the Nemesis expansion for its sci-fi grand strategy game, Stellaris. A final release date hasn’t been announced yet, but the expansion does have a Steam page ready and in place.

Stellaris: Nemesis will require the base Stellaris game in order to play it, of course. If you don’t already have this excellent 4X game, it’s currently on sale at Steam for just $9.99, which includes a 75% discount, but only until February 11. The Stellaris Galaxy Edition (which includes the Digital Collector's Book, official soundtrack, Stellaris: Infinite Frontiers novel by Steven Savile, exclusive avatar and forum icon galaxy, and signed wallpaper) is also on sale at a 75% discount for just $12.49, and also only until February 11. The Stellaris: Starter Pack (which includes the base Stellaris game and the Utopia, Apocalypse, Leviathans Story Pack, and Synthetic Dawn Story Pack) currently has a 64% discount for a price of $35.95.

If you’ve been playing Stellaris, and are a fan of other 4x grand strategy games, you know that gameplay centers on the protagonist whose mission is generally working toward saving the entities in-game. In the upcoming Nemesis expansion, the developers are flipping the script on that story and will give you the chance to choose between becoming the savior of the galaxy, or becoming its ultimate ruler.

Become the Crisis will be a new ascension perk added to the list, and it will become available to you after you have achieved two other ascension perks. According to the devs, Become the Crisis will be available “to most types of empires, but xenophiles, pacifists and rogue servitors are unable to have the color purple as their favorite.” Once chosen, you’ll receive a new UI tab that will show your current crisis perks and menace objectives. These objectives involve subtly nefarious and outright evil deeds, and will earn you Menace with each successfully-completed one. Earning Menace will advance you through multiple Crisis Levels, until you reach the ultimate goal of building the Aetherophasic Engine Frame. For this, you’ll be given access to Star Eater ships that are capable of collecting the dark matter needed for the Aetherophasic Engine's construction. Once the Aetherophasic Engine is complete, you'll become the greatest power in the universe, and it's game over for all other factions.
