Stranded Deep is a survival game that places you in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, so the main areas you'll explore are islands and the open sea. This, of course, means dealing with lots of aquatic creatures like edible fishes, adorable sea turtles, and even a giant squid.

You'll have to learn some things about each type of aquatic fauna to survive in the game's environment properly. For example, which species can you interact with? Or, which ones will inflict poison damage on your character? To make things easier for you, here's everything you should know about aquatic creatures in Stranded Deep.

Types Of Aquatic Creatures

It doesn't matter if you're dealing with a terrifying shark or a harmless starfish; all aquatic species in this game fall into one of the following categories:

Interactable Aquatic Animals

These creatures are the ones you'll have to know how to deal with since they're interactable, meaning you can kill them, and they can harm you as well. In this group, you'll find animals with different behaviors, like harmless fishes you can use for food or boss-type creatures that'll make things interesting if you like a challenge. These are all the Interactable aquatic creatures you'll encounter.

Archer Fish

A small fish you can catch and skin to get one piece of small meat. Just keep in mind that the best weapon to use with Archer Fish is the fishing spear. Moreover, these fishes can be seen anywhere in the ocean but are especially common in near shallow places.

Giant Grouper Fish

Giant Grouper Fish from Stranded Deep

These big boys are hard to miss since they're humongous, which is good news if you're looking for something to eat since Giant Grouper Fish will grant you two medium pieces of meat after skinning them with the refined knife.

This fish species is commonly found alone and near the open sea (so don't forget your shark repellent) Any weapon will work with them but keep in mind that you'll need to drag them since the fish can't be stored in your inventory due to the creature's size.

Discus Fish

Similar to the Archer Fish, Discus Fish is a species you can catch to obtain small meat. Discus fish are also best fished using a fishing spear, and you'll find them in the shallow waters that are near islands.

Cod

These guys are bigger so if you catch them, they'll give you one medium meat. You'll be able to fish Cods using the fishing spear in the deep sea or on the edges of islands. Just remember to bring a shark repellent so you'll stay out of danger.

Lionfish

Lionfish from Stranded Deep

These spiky fellas are commonly found near the open. Once killed, they'll provide the player with one small piece of meat. This isn't their only use as Lionfish are also needed to make shark repellent.

However, when trying to fish this species, keep in mind that they're capable of inflicting poison damage if you touch them, so it's best to bring some antidotes when trying to catch Lionfish.

Sardines

These tiny fishes will only give you one piece of small meat. You can find them in shallow waters and use a fishing spear to kill them. While they don't provide that much substance, Sardines are a super accessible food source, so you'll probably find yourself eating lots of those when starting out in this game.

Crown of Thorns Starfish

While you can't do anything with this type of creature, you should avoid them at all cost as stepping on one of them will give your character a poisoning status effect, forcing you to craft and use an antidote in order to stop it.

You can spot this type of starfish on beaches, shallow waters, and on coral and rocks.

 Sea Urchin

Similar to the Crown of Thorns Starfish, Sea Urchins will inflict poisoning damage upon contact. However, besides that, there isn't much you can do with them, so it's best to avoid these spiky things at all costs.

Sharks

Sharks from Stranded Deep

You can't expect to play a game that takes place in the Pacific Ocean without expecting to come across a shark or two. In Stranded Deep, you'll find nine different shark species, with some of them being:

  • Aggressive: these types of sharks will attack you on sight and can even try to throw you off a raft. The Tiger Shark, Hammerhead Shark, Goblin Shark, Great White Shark, and The Meg are known to be aggressive species.
  • Non-hostile: these types of sharks won't attack you. Instead, they'll swim around you. However, if you attack them, there is a chance they'll swim away. Known non-hostile sharks species in Stranded Deep are the Whale Shark and the Marlin.

Either way, sharks provide rawhide and large pieces of meat and are found in shallow and deep parts of the ocean. To hunt them down, you should use weapons like the crude spear, the refined spear, or the speargun. But if you want to avoid them instead, then craft some shark repellent using x1 Coconut Flask, x1 Antidote, and x1 LionFish.

Bosses

Lusca the Great from Stranded Deep

If you want to progress through Stranded Deep's story, you'll have to deal with boss-type creatures eventually, as they must be defeated if you want to reach the game's ending.

Currently, there are three bosses in the game. You'll know where they are by looking for a red skull icon on the Cartographer screen. Each boss will have a different attack pattern, so defeating each one will require preparation and a strategy on your part.

All the effort will be worth it since, after defeating a boss, you'll be able to craft the parts you need to repair the damaged aircraft. There are three parts, thus three bosses to defeat, those are:

  • The Meg: As you can guess from its name, The Meg one is the biggest shark you'll encounter in the game. It has 500 Health points and can inflict bleeding damage, jump out of the water to attack you, and drag you around. The best weapons to use against this giant shark are refined spears and the speargun.
  • The Great Abaia: This boss is a huge Eel that deals more damage than The Meg and has more health. The good news is that this fight will be pretty similar to the one with The Meg, so you won't be in uncharted territory.
  • Lusca the Great: This is the last boss, so fighting it will be a challenge. This giant squid is not playing around. To put things into perspective, weapons like crude spears or the speargun won't harm it that much. Not only that, but the squid has a lot of health and can attack using its tentacles AND its beak.

Non-Interactable Aquatic Animals

clownfish and sea turtle from Stranded Deep

These types of creatures are in the game mostly as a cosmetic addition, you can touch or bump into some of them, but there isn't much you can do with non-interactable animals. These are all the creatures you can't interact with:

  • Blacktip reef shark
  • Copperband Butterflyfish
  • Clownfish
  • Humpback whale
  • Paracanthurus
  • Sea turtle
  • Sea snake
  • Stingray
  • Starfish

And that's it. Enjoy exploring the ocean.
