My father used to argue with me that his era of cartoons that he grew up with were the best cartoons in existence. This largely consisted of some of his favorites like Johnny Quest or Speed Racer. Though being introduced to his cartoons as a child, I just didn’t understand the appeal. It makes sense that this was the case though, as I think any generation will likely vouch for their own childhood favorites claiming them as the best. But I’m here to say this right now. They are wrong. The 90s was the best decade of cartoons ever.

Am I being biased? Maybe, and I will agree that every generation has unleashed some great gems, but come on. The 90s brought us forth more mature cartoons that we still watch today like The Simpsons or South Park. It brought us something called the Disney Renaissance along with some of the best animated films in existence. Not only that, but the 90s were the birth of the Nicktoon. The 90s totally rocked.

But much like the cartoons of the 90s, the fan base has also aged, but that doesn’t mean their love for their favorite cartoons has diminished. Even cartoons of years past still get plenty of love from the fan art community online… for better or worse. Yes, plenty of fan art are unique representations of their subject material, but there are some that are… just plain bizarre. Here are some of the strangest fan arts we’ve seen from 90s cartoons.

23 He Never Was Too Lucky

mickeymonster.deviantart.com

Oswald the Lucky Rabbit never really had a lucky streak when you consider the fact that he was created by Walt Disney only to be dethroned by Mickey Mouse a while later who then became the face of the Disney Corporation.

Maybe that is potentially why he is so angry.

I can’t blame his anger, though I think he might be better going after the person that stole the spotlight rather than Yakko, Wakko, and Dot from the Animaniacs. No, the trio may have nothing on the mouse, but considering they all somewhat share a similar art style akin to the early days of animation (and Cuphead!), maybe Oswald is just taking his anger out on anyone who fits that classic animation style. At least the Animaniacs are usually okay with physical humor.

22 Attack On Toonville

atariboy2600.deviantart.com

Attack on Titan probably isn’t a cartoon that many would expect to see crossover with classic cartoons from the 90s, mainly because most cartoons in that era were pretty kid friendly while Attack on Titan is targeted toward a more mature audience.

Regardless, the internet tends to make weird mashups happen either way.

While Tiny Toon Adventures might seem like a weird choice to use when combining the show with a classic cartoon, you can’t deny that it works having the main human characters Max and Elmyra portray the grotesque and building sized Titans while the rest of the anthropomorphic animal characters fend off their home together. Elmyra is definitely not someone I would like to see in Titan form, though. She’s aggressive enough as it is!

21 They Look More Disturbing This Way

isaiahstephens.deviantart.com

There’s something about seeing traditional cartoon characters drawn with a more realistic approach that always kind of perturbed me, especially when they are much younger in age (or animals). There’s no lack of fan art for the popular kid’s series Rugrats on the internet, but not many do it like this. But there's something about seeing Tommy, Chuckie, Phil, and Lil in an almost photo realistic picture that is just unsettling… especially considering these demonic babies managed to capture and tie up an older kid who is twice their size. Angelica definitely deserves the punishment she’s receiving though after all those years of torturing a  group of babies. Sadly, Susie, Kimi, and Dil don’t get much love in this piece of fan art as they are subjected to only appearing as background characters outside.

20 He's Up To His Usual Funny Business

cryptomorphe.deviantart.com

Doug Funny really isn’t the type of kid who causes any trouble. Most of his adolescent years were spent trying to avoid it and usually stressing way to much about the potential of getting in trouble to his journal. That’s why this piece of fan art seems entirely unlikely considering Doug’s track record. It’s just too difficult to see Doug beheading his beloved dog Porkchop as well as his favorite neighbor Mr. Dink only to play creator.

Skeeter is definitely taken aback by Doug’s new interest in anatomy, however.

Rightfully so, f course, but the most interesting reaction is that of Mr. Dink who seems more than thrilled to be attached to Porkchop’s old body. Then again, Mr. Dink was always a few screws short in the head.

19 From Super Charged To Cocktail Waitress

dj-blu3z.deviantart.com

I guess the crime wave in the city of Townsville severely diminished once the Powerpuff Girls reached an older age. While crime fighting used to be what seemed like a full time job for the adorable trio, it seems like Blossom, Bubbles, and Buttercup have to resort to working other part time jobs at an older age.

Unfortunately, with the way the job market has been in recent years, it seems that their options in career choices are a little slim.

It seems the trio are working as cocktail waitresses at what one can only assume is a gentlemen’s club. While Bubbles seems to have no problem being flirty toward guests, Buttercup definitely knows the pains of the service industry. Hopefully, they don’t get too many rude customers, though. Blossom obviously isn’t going to take that from anyone.

18 I Wouldn't Want To Cross These Boys

saintyak.deviantart.com

The Beagle Boys have always been a somewhat dimwitted crew of burglars, despite being the bane of Scrooge McDuck’s existence in the hit Disney classic DuckTales. Even though they try their best over and over again to steal Scrooge’s fortune, the Beagle Boy’s seem to lack the intelligence to really be considered capable, much to the dismay of Ma Beagle. While this group of burglars typically comes across as nonthreatening, I may have to reconsider my stance on them when looking at this variation of them. Sure, they still look a little sloppy, but they still manage to look way more sinister at the same time. Maybe it is just because of all the tattoos they have accumulated that makes them look a little more hardened? I definitely wouldn’t want to cross Bouncer Beagle, though. Those gains are quite serious!

17 A Weird Art Form For A Weird Show

wease.deviantart.com

Ren and Stimpy are kind of two characters from the 90s that are already no stranger to uncomfortable images. There’s a reason why The Ren and Stimpy Show was hated by so many adults in the 90s. The animation style (and jokes) were often a bit over the top for the intended audience.

With that said, it should be no surprise that a similar art style trickled down into the show’s fan art.

While this approach is slightly more realistic than the shows, it still manages to make the titular characters rather frightening, despite them simply being a cat and dog. Whether it’s the stare from those freaky eyes, the fact that they are still standing on two feet, or maybe how prominent their chests are, we are glad the show never went with this style of animation.

16 One Large Pizza, Extra Cheese

riproarrex.deviantart.com

I get that the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles live in a sewer, but come on! There is no reason why the four mutants can’t be a little more prone to showering. Besides, they totally have access to April O’Neil's apartment, so living underground and dealing with sewage water is no excuse! Regardless, it seems that the turtles have avoided a good scrubbing for some time.

They’ve got plenty of cheese going on, but sadly, we’re not talking about a pizza topping.

It seems that the sewer rat is still mildly enticed, but he may end up being a bit disappointed when he realizes that that is not the cheese he is looking for. We just hope that the rat is not a Master Splinter mutated into a more primal version of himself.

15 We Weren't Looking For Her There!

jora-bora.deviantart.com

Next time people are wondering where in the world Carmen Sandiego is, they may need to think a little bit more outside of the box than before. It seems like Carmen Sandiego has finally met her match in this unlikely and bizarre mashup. A human version of Rouge the Bat from the Sonic the Hedgehog series is seemingly still the world’s best treasure hunter and isn’t going to let the likes of Carmen Sandiego get in the way. For whatever reason, Carmen has been miniaturized and Rouge has no qualms about putting a stop to her once and for all, swallowing the once undefeated thief whole. It’s definitely a strange mashup, but seeing Carmen Sandiego meet her match by someone so unlikely is definitely interesting to see.

14 This Is What Pollution Gets Us

jaacqus.deviantart.com

You know how pollution is a serious issue in today’s world? And you know how multiple gallons of toxic waste are dumped into the ocean every year? This is what happens when we don’t take care of Mother Nature. It seems that Ariel and her best buddy Flounder have seen better days under the sea as they have been mutated likely due to high pollution levels.

Luckily, no amount of mutation can keep this pair apart and they actually seem closer than ever.

Flounder certainly has grown some wicked fangs and looks way more vicious than he did before. Ariel on the other hand looks like she has no problem with her new mutations either and actually seems to be showcasing a toothy grin for us regardless. Or it’s just toothy because half her jaw is missing. It’s hard to say.

13 Even More Gross Than Usual

scumbugg.deviantart.com

Beetlejuice didn’t actually get his start as a cartoon character as he actually originated from the Tim Burton movie of the same name. Regardless, the movie was critically acclaimed and popular with the public, so it only seemed natural to adapt the paranormal being into a Saturday morning cartoon series. While Beetlejuice definitely had a twisted and dark sense of humor, it had to be slightly watered down for the cartoon version. Despite that, his grotesque nature and oddball humor still managed to shine, despite him not being as vindictive as he was in the movie. Yet for a character named Beetlejuice, he still lacked a good amount of what made him Beetlejuice… beetles. Though this piece of fan art has the ghost covered head to toe in those disgusting critters. This is someone I definitely wouldn’t invite inside!

12 A Little Too Real For Our Tastes

dubisch.deviantart.com

I have already kind of discussed how disturbing I find fan art that takes on a more realistic approach compared to its more cartoonish counterpart. We’ve taken a look at Nickelodeon’s Rugrats, but that doesn’t hold a candle when it is compared to cartoons with anthropomorphic sea creatures. SpongeBob SquarePants is almost twenty years old now and we wouldn’t be surprised if the cartoon series is running out of ideas and wouldn’t consider doing a whole episode in this style.

Though Squidward with one eye is pretty much what nightmares are made of.

Seeing all of the main characters from Bikini Bottom realistically portraying the creatures they were based off of is a little too much… and I’m really not quite sure if that weird sense of humor that has been a staple of the series would work with this more realistic style.

11 He Breaks Everything He Touches

silentkv.deviantart.com

I know what you are thinking. Super Mario Bros. isn’t actually a cartoon, it is a video game! Well, sure, but that means if you just lumped it in as a game, you would have to ignore all those Mario cartoon spinoffs that appeared in the early nineties and why would you want to do that? Mario is typically seen as the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom, but we have seen time and time again that Mario is actually a much bigger jerk than he appears to be and than how Nintendo portrays him as.

I mean, what kind of plumber goes around destroying everything in his path while destroying “innocent” creatures?

You can’t help but feel sorry for the Goombas and Koopas in this fan art as they have been devastated by Mario’s actions far too many times.

10 There Wasn't Much Up Top Anyway

atomiccircus.deviantart.com

This piece of fan art doesn’t seem entirely too unlikely if there ever were a zombie apocalypse in The Simpsons universe. It seems like Springfield has a case of the zombies, but that’s not going to stop Bart from attempting to protect himself. Despite Homer being his father, Bart has no qualms about putting an arrow there.

Unfortunately for Bart, it doesn’t look like his bow and arrow tactic was enough to stop his father.

While aiming at a zombie’s head is usually considered the appropriate means for incapacitating them, Homer never really had much brains up above anyway so maybe that method isn’t the best. Homer still has the munchies even in his zombie state, however, and it seems like Bart is still going to fall victim to his father once again.

9 This Would Have Made A Better Ending

animat505.deviantart.com

Quasimodo never really was that headstrong of a Disney character, likely because he spent his life isolated from society and had to deal with all the emotional and possibly physical abuse from his keeper Frollo. This piece of fan art features a slightly more vindictive Quasimodo, even if he is only imagining getting his revenge on Frollo. Even so, it’s hard to imagine this innocent character thinking such things. Regardless, Frollo is certainly one Disney villain that we wouldn’t mind seeing getting suckered. Even though he might not be the most powerful Disney villain, he definitely has one of the darkest hearts. I guess Quasimodo just needed a push and and interest in the right girl to finally get back at his keeper.

8 We Always Knew She Was Weird

via rtradke.deviantart.com

This is another category that seems to be rather popular among the fan art community for one reason or another — despite being altogether wholesome originally. This is a really simply picture of the infamous Jynx, but with the catch that it's completely realized and therefore kind of weird. In this image, Jynx has arms the length of her body and lips that look like they could swallow us whole — pretty strange indeed.

Needless to say, artist Rtradke has set a new standard in creepy Pokémon art, one that will be hard to follow up. The longer you stare are this picture, the creepier it gets. Just look at it's wide eyes.

7 Somehow, We Never Questioned Her Wardrobe

edtropolis.deviantart.com

Sally Acorn’s wardrobe choices always was a little questionable ever since she made her debut in the original Sonic the Hedgehog comics back in the 90s. While she has gone through multiple variations throughout the ages, her original design only consisted of boots and no other clothing at all. Sure, other cartoon characters have followed in her path, many often times missing something crucial, but Sally has always been a little more... interesting. This of course has led to hundreds of works of fan art depicting the squirrel in rather strange liught. Amy Rose is definitely not pleased with Sally’s wardrobe choice, that’s for sure. Even though she may have chosen to actually wear a top, she is still missing something, unlike the more conservatively dressed Amy Rose.

6 A Little Group Therapy Never Hurt

xternalflamebryx.deviantart.com

Dr. Katz: Professional Therapist was one of those late night cartoons that I never totally understood growing up, but still often times tried to watch as it was on Comedy Central, was meant for adults, and was a cartoon, so pretty much anything I knew my parents wouldn’t want me watching, I tried to watch. The show revolved around its titular character who would try to treat various celebrities in therapy sessions and their voice work was usually just clips of their stand up comedy acts. This variation of the show features Dr. Katz tackling a different kind of therapy centered around various cartoon henchmen. Even though these characters span many different ages, a good chunk fall into the 90s. Sadly, knowing all the villains in this room, it looks like Dr. Katz is about to have his toughest session yet.

5 If He Wasn't Loud Enough...

berkozturk.deviantart.com

It’s hard to believe that Family Guy originated as a failed cartoon series on Fox all the way back in the 90s and it wasn’t until the show was reborn back in 2005 that it really picked up in popularity due to high DVD sales and high viewing numbers of reruns. Regardless, the series is a child of the 90s either way you slice it. This strange yet disturbing piece of fan art probably instantly had you hearing “Mom! Mom! Mom!” in your head.

Either that, or it reminds you of one of the most annoying ringtones in existence.

Despite how annoying this scene is, it is definitely a classic for the show and instantly recognizable, though this representation of the scene makes it look more like an ad for an anti-depressant medication. Lois clearly needs a break from her demons.

4 I Guess The Rescuing Business Didn't Pan Out

songficcer.deviantart.com

Chip and Dale was a rather strange choice of names for the two titular chipmunks of the rescue rangers when you realize how close the two names together sounds like the popular male dance troupe known for their rather scandalous dancing called Chippendales. Intentional? Who knows, but you can’t deny the two sound alike. Even though Chip and Dale were the head of their own Rescue Ranger business, rescuing needy animals, it seems like they have had to resort to other methods of making a quick buck. Maybe their business is tanking or maybe they just need a second job, but the two were likely enticed seeing a business that closely matches their names. They definitely would be a unique fit for the dance troupe, but unfortunately for them, I think size matters in this line of work.
