Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin announced its first expansion today. Although the announcement initially began with a Rock Roll (something nobody would have expected from a company like Square Enix outside of April Fools Day), the dulcet tones of Rick Astley were soon replaced by a 43-second trailer confirming Stranger of Paradise’s new expansion will be called Trials of the Dragon King.

The trailer doesn’t show much. We see Bahamut, Final Fantasy’s most famous summon, descend from on high and start battling against Jack and his Warriors of Light. Then some other warriors show up who also do battle. Square Enix’s description of the trailer, however, promises new jobs, weapons, accessories, and a category of equipment, along with new stories, areas, and challenges.

The trailer also reveals the existence of a season pass and the names of the next two expansions: Wanderer of the Rift and Different Future. No price was given for the season pass, but it's already included in the Digital Deluxe Edition, which is $30 above the cost of the standard edition.

Trials of the Dragon King arrives on July 20.

In her review, Meg gave Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin four out of five stars, calling it a worthy retelling of Final Fantasy’s oldest story.

"Stranger of Paradise is violent, dark, and brilliantly captivating. It’s a must-play for Final Fantasy fans," wrote Meg. "Steeped in sentiment and lovingly crafted homages to our favourite games, it offers a new mystery to unravel and breaks the mould of what you’d expect from the series."

Stranger of Paradise: Final Fantasy Origin is available on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC via the Epic Games Store.
