The indie game community has recently been infatuated with Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy. For the uninitiated: Getting Over It is a platformer where you play as Diogenes, a legendary Greek philosopher who was famous for living in a large ceramic jar. Diogenes' only method of transportation is swinging a large Yosemite Hammer, which players must use to hook onto objects to propel themselves up and over several obstacles.
Last Friday, Twitch streamer Distortion2 made history by completing Getting Over It in under two minutes, setting a brand new world record for this game. The record-setting clip from Distortion2's stream, which has several nail-biting close calls, already has over two million views. In the video, after Distortion2 completes his speed run, he immediately makes the understandable decision to uninstall the game.
Much like Cuphead and Dark Souls, Getting Over It is designed to be overly frustrating and difficult. Mistakes in the game can result in devastating setbacks. The game's creator, Bennett Foddy, has stated that Getting Over It was specifically designed for "a certain kind of person, [just] to hurt them," which is absolutely apparent when you watch anyone attempt to play this game. When players make a critical mistake, Foddy's monotone voice-over provides "motivational" quotes about failure. Despite its incredible difficulty, Getting Over It is wildly successful among streamers from all around the world. In China, the game is somewhat hilariously known as "You Should Visit Home More Frequently."
According to Getting Over Its leaderboard, Distortion2's accomplishment has yet to be matched by any player. According to Steam's statistics, over half a million people purchased Getting Over It in the past month, and less than 1 percent of players have successfully reached the end of this game. Simply beating Getting Over It is an accomplishment in and of itself, so Distortion2's speedrun is truly groundbreaking.
If you think that you're the kind of gamer Foddy wants to hurt, you can download Getting Over It on Steam, or purchase it through Humble Bundle. Getting Over It With Bennett Foddy is a powerful meditation on failure and frustration, so before you start this game, be sure to secure any objects in your house that could be hurled in a fit of rage.
