Popular streamer Jenna has lost her Twitch partnership after the leak of her chat logs, which show some baffling sexist, racist, ableist, and other slurs. This comes after she has publicly admitted that she knew that what she did was wrong, offering an apology in which she claimed she did not remember writing those things and that she "would deserve" to lose her partnership.
The chat logs appeared earlier in January on Reddit, first posted on the r/LivestreamFail subreddit, but quickly making it to r/all, Reddit's front page. The logs range from 2016 to as recently as December 2019, showing a pattern of disturbing behavior that went on for very long. It took Twitch more than two weeks to strip her of her partnership status, which only means that she won't be getting any partner or affiliate benefits - she is still able to stream uninterrupted.
As the streamer herself unveiled this news on her Twitter profile, she also hinted at a possibility of her returning to the partnership program, as she says she "will regain [their] trust and the community’s with my future actions," adding that she understands their decision. Many in the community have noted that even her previous apology was what is often called a "non-pology," which means she isn't fully admitting to what she did or deflecting from the issue at hand.
"I'm sorry for hurting anyone's feelings, you're right. I'm sorry that I'm a f**k up, and I'm sorry that I'm a stupid girl and I'm sorry that I make mistakes," she said at the time of the unveiling of the logs, prompting many to call for a takedown of her channel. She has since stopped streaming, but her tweet implies that she will still stay with the platform.
Her apologies have been criticized for being insincere, but since the problematic logs were taken from Discord and not Twitch, the latter's guidelines are not strictly against such behavior. They do state that the platform "may take action against users for hateful conduct or harassment that occurs off Twitch services," but only if those users are also Twitch users, so many did not expect Jenna to meet any repercussions. However, the example of Jenna shows that simply following the letter of the law can be hurtful in some instances – and that maybe she deserved a more thorough punishment than just losing her partnership status.
