Magic: The Gathering's next set is called Strixhaven: School of Mages, and the name pretty much tells you everything you need to know about the theme. Instead of dwelling on the educational aesthetic, we're going to dive into the world of Strixhaven by taking a look at each of the five colleges that comprise Strixhaven's student body.

Each college will probably remind you of Ravnica's enemy-colored guilds, but with an academic twist. Lorehold is red-white (or Boros in Ravnica terms), but instead of being righteous and militant, Lorehold is studious and daring. Indiana Jones would make a great professor for a Lorehold classroom.

Prismari is red-blue and is the "theatre kids" of Strixhaven. They're all about expressing themselves through magic, and sometimes accidentally burning down their dorm room when they express themselves a little too much.

Quandrix is blue-green, a strange combination for Strixhaven's math magicians. You'd think like Simic they'd be all about bio-science run amok, but then again, you can find a lot of math in nature (Fibonacci anyone?).

Silverquill's motto is "Sharp style. Sharper wit." The black-white college is sort of like if debate club and the fashion club combined into one terrifying group of bullies.

And finally, Witherbloom is the "goth bio majors" of Strixhaven. Black-green means they deal with death magic and nature magic in equal measure.

Wizards of the Coast has given us a preview of what each college will be about by displaying a new set of Command spells for each college. Lorehold Command, for example, lets the caster choose between making spirit creature tokens; giving your creatures +1/+0, indestructible, and haste until end of turn; dealing three damage and gaining three life; or sacrificing a permanent to draw three cards.

Also coming in Strixhaven is the Mystical Archive, a set of 63 spells from across Magic's history. One card from the Mystical Archive will come in every Strixhaven Draft or Set Booster, and three will come in the Collector Booster. We don't what all 63 of those cards will be, but we did get three examples: Opt, Demonic Tutor, and Swords to Plowshares. Each one comes with its own unique border and card art.

Just because these Mystical Archives arrive in Strixhaven boosters doesn't mean they're Standard legal, but they are legal to use in Draft. Also, Japan will get its own set of 63 Mystical Archive cards, and Collector Boosters of every language will have at least one Japanese card in them.

Strixhaven: School of Mages will arrive sometime in March.
