For longtime fans of the Stronghold franchise, the first thing you'll notice about this new incarnation is that it's far more vibrant than we're used to. Gone are the bland beiges and gloomy greys to make way for luscious greens and vibrant decor as the setting moves to 3rd century BC China. Stronghold Warlords goes back to the roots of the franchise, which it firmly places down in a new location, bringing new units, new ideas and a new lease on life to the series.

A New Location

Moving the game's location to china is a bold move but one which looks set to pay off. Not only does it bring a new vibrancy to the franchise, which is usually set in the interesting but distinctly grey and beige medieval Europe, but we also see new ways to fight.

Mongol hordes, imperial warriors and samurais are all present as you take control of new weapons and face a new enemy. It still feels like Stronghold, especially the earlier incarnations, yet it also feels like an entirely new game. The mission I played has echoes of past games combined with new and unique ideas, one of which is Warlords.

Warlords And Allegiances

The game's title comes from this new system, that sees players accumulate points that they can trade for favors from neighboring Warlords. In the demo, which comprises one fully playable mission, you can demand allegiance from one of your neighbors who will send you stone, wood, or weapons, with further help available over time.

This appears to form the basis of a complex system that will see you trade favors and team up with other Warlords to defeat a common enemy. The system itself is a nice addition to the game. Despite playing just one mission, the help from elsewhere made a tangible difference. I was able to acquire extra stone, which I couldn't gather myself, to fortify my defenses. It also felt very empowering to demand things and know your request would be fulfilled.

Not much more is known about the system at this point, apart from the fact that it will offer strategic advantages, unique perks, and upgradable abilities. However, I'm hoping we see different warlords react in different ways to what is asked of them, with not everyone being so keen to help so quickly.

Send Out The Fire Oxen

The game traces a path through history, from 3rd century BC China up to the Mongol Empire in 1200 AD. It's said to include some historical battles including the arrival of Genghis Khan.

In the demo, you only have access to a limited number of ground troops and archers, which you can train. You also have a fire oxen, which is one of the most random and fun units I've ever seen.

Fire oxen are (unsurprisingly) oxen with gunpowder strapped to their backs. They can be sent out onto the battlefield to cause chaos and explode. They are unpredictable and amazing in equal measure. I just hope the other units are as much fun to command.

Demonstrating Potential

It's always difficult to assess a game from just one level but so far Stronghold Warlords is looking good. The setting suits the franchise, giving it a fresh feel and a new lease on life. Extra troops and the addition of gunpowder, which you use in limited amounts in the demo, bring new challenges to the game and the Warlords mechanics look set to be unique and engaging.

It's so far so good for the franchise, which celebrated its 18th birthday earlier this month. I can't wait to play more.
