Lead is a valuable resource in Subnautica: Below Zero, as it allows you to craft Enameled Glass (used to craft valuable Depth upgrades for the Seatruck and Prawn Suit) as well as Reactor Rods, which are used in the Nuclear Reactor late-game to generate loads of energy.

Lead is also required to craft the Moonpool (where you store and charge vehicles), as well as the Modification Station Habitat Module. Because of its many uses, you want to prioritize getting lots of Lead whenever you're in the right biome. Here's everything you need to know about where to find Lead.

How To Find Lead In Subnautica: Below Zero

galena outcrop and twisty bridges biome

There are loads of different biomes that will have Lead somewhere. Lead is found in Galena Outcrops, which spawn in these biomes:

  • Crystal Caves
  • Lilypad Islands
  • Thermal Spires
  • Twisty Bridges and Shallow Twisty Bridges
  • Glacial Connection
  • East Arctic

Out of these biomes, by far the easiest (and safest) area to look for Galena Outcrops is the Twisty Bridges and Shallow Twisty Bridges. These are close to your Drop Pod location and a good area to set up a base in the early game.

These two biomes are located to the south of your Drop Pod spot. You can't miss it: the biome is made up of loads of twisty bridges (that look like tentacles) with blue lights underneath.

The biome transitions into a Shallow version as you get closer to Delta Island. You should first start to see the biome between 300 meters and 400 meters from the Drop Pod.

How To Find Lead In The Twisty Bridges Biome

The Twisty Bridges biome is not overly dangerous. Brute Sharks do roam the area (they do 30 damage per bite), but these can easily be avoided with a Seaglider, Fins, or if you have crafted one, a Seatruck.

Here's everything else you need to find Lead:

  • High Capacity O2 Tank - This is one of the items you should prioritize in the early game. Having more Oxygen helps you explore for longer and travel deeper. It means you'll have to take fewer trips searching for Outcrops.
  • Rebreather - The Galena Outcrops in the Twisty Bridges biome are located below 100 meters, which means you will suffer an Oxygen penalty if you haven't got the Rebreather equipped. Here's our guide on how to find the Rebreather.
  • Seaglider - This makes swimming much faster. Not only will you be able to collect Outcrops faster, but you will also stand a better chance of escaping from angry Brute Sharks.
  • Seatruck - If you have the Seatruck, great. This will make the whole process faster. However, it's not absolutely necessary to have the truck before you head into the Twisty Bridges.
  • Mineral Detector - This is a hugely useful tool for finding the Galena Outcrops. Because they're basically lumps of grey rock, it can be handy to have the Detector tell you where they are. Just set the Detector to search for Galena and it will keep you in the right direction.

Once in the Twisty Bridges biome, you want to dive into some of the caverns, channels, and chasms that make up the biome. You should be relatively safe here, with no nearby Brute Sharks or Leviathans to cause you any problems.

Galena Outcrops are found at around 100 meters +, so the Rebreather does come in handy. If you don't have the Rebreather yet, a handful of raw Bladderfish can grant you a few chunks of Oxygen to help you harvest Lead.

General tips:

  • Go during the daytime. It gets very dark at night in the Twisty Bridges and you won't be able to see any rocks.
  • Make sure to check all the cliffs and areas that cut into the cliffs. The Outcrops can be hiding down those channels.
  • Get a Mineral Detector, which is crafted with a Battery, Titanium, Copper Wire, and Silicone Rubber.
  • Each Galena Outcrop has a chance to drop either Titanium or Lead, so you might need to crack a few open.
  • Compared to the other biomes in Subnautica: Below Zero where you can find Lead (like the Crystal Caves or Lilypad Islands), the Twisty Bridges is the closest, safest, and most efficient area to get Lead in the game.
  • Lead is not available in larger resource deposits, like Silver or Gold, but because of its availability in the Galena Outcrops, you should be able to get everything you need.

Sea Monkeys Will Gift You Lead (Spoilers Below)

A Sea Monkey with a stolen Thermoblade in Subnautica: Below Zero

Later in the game, when you're bored of hunting for Galena Outcrops in every biome you pass through, you can always turn to the Sea Monkeys for help. These friendly creatures will gift you random resources, including Lead.

Sure, you do have to meet and integrate with Al-An first, but who shakes their head at extra resources? It seems like the Sea Monkeys have a bit of a soft spot for the Precursors. They are super-intelligent extra-terrestrial beings, so it kinda makes sense. The monkeys can even gift you rarer ores, like Gold.
