Subnautica takes place on Planet 4546B, an ocean planet. That means that almost every surface on there is completely covered in water; these conditions leave little to no room to walk around; instead, you'll have to swim wherever you want to go. And, as you can guess, swimming from one place to another isn't the most practical or fastest way to reach any destination.

Don't worry, though, as Subnautica gives players the possibility to build different forms of transportations. These vehicles range from suits to walk around to giant submarines that can resist the attacks from the most aggressive creatures on this planet. If you're new to the game and don't know how to start building these vehicles or just want to know which one is actually the best, here is a guide that will help you answer most of your questions.

This Is What You'll Need Before Crafting Vehicles

Mobile Vehicle Bay floating

Except for the Seaglide that can be crafted using the Fabricator, you'll need to make a Mobile Vehicle Bay to build the other vehicles in the game (the Cyclops, the Seamoth, and the Prawn Suit).

To obtain the Vehicle Bay, you'll need to scan three fragments to get the Blueprint for this item, then simply go to the Fabricator and craft it. The materials you'll need are:

  • Ten pieces of Titanium to make one Titanium Ingot.
  • One Creepvine Seed Cluster to craft one Lubricant.
  • Two batteries (made with two Acid Mushroom and one Copper Ore) and once Silicone Rubber (made with one Creepvine Seed Cluster) to make one Power Cell.

Seaglide

Seaglide in use Subnautica

The Seaglide is probably one of the first vehicles you'll be able to make (it takes 5 seconds to build it, after all). This one is a deployable vehicle, meaning you can store it in the inventory and take it out whenever you need it.

What sets that Seaglide apart from the other vehicles in the game is that this one is handheld, so unlike the Seamoth or the Cyclops, you don't need to go inside it to use it. Another cool feature this vehicle has is the 3D map of the immediate terrain it has integrated. It also has an integrated flashlight you can use (but it consumes the Seaglide's energy); however, it isn't as good as the regular flashlight.

Like all the other vehicles, the Seaglide consumes energy, so it has a specific life spawn. Once the battery runs out, you can replace it with another one. A fully charged Seaglide should be able to travel around 3800 meters.

How to craft a Seaglide

Seaglide fragment in Subnautica

Before you can actually build the Seaglide, you'll need to look for its fragments and scan them to obtain blueprints for the vehicles (in the Seaglide's case, you'll need to scan at least two). You'll find those fragments in the following biomes:

  • Kelp Forest
  • Safe Shallows
  • Small Wrecks
  • Wrecks

After you obtain the Blueprint, you'll have to find the ingredients you need to craft this vehicle. Those are:

  • Two Acid Mushroom and one Copper ore to craft one Battery
  • One Creepvine Seed Cluster to craft one Lubricant
  • Two Copper Ore to craft one Copper Wire
  • One Titanium (this one is a basic supply which you can find in Limestone Outcrops or crafting it from Metal Salvage)

After you've gathered all the ingredients, just head over to the Fabricator and craft the Seaglide.

Seamoth

Subnautica's Seamoth

Top Speed: 13m/s

Acceleration: 5m/s/s

Distance per power cell: 10km

The Seamoth is a huge upgrade from the Seaglide; this vehicle lets you be inside it and has a health of 300. Still, it isn't indestructible, this vehicle is vulnerable to attacks from hostile creatures, crashing it into objects or some plants, being exposed to temperatures hotter than 70°C, or going below its maximum crush depth (200 meters when you first craft it and can be taking up to 900 with upgrades).

How To Craft A Seamoth

Seamoth's fragments in Subnautica

To get the Seamoth's Blueprint, you'll have to scan three of its fragments. You'll be able to find those in:

  • The Aurora
  • The Seabed (in the Grassy Plateaus)
  • The Wrecks
  • The Small Wrecks

After you have the recipe, head over to your Mobile Vehicle Bay and use these ingredients to craft the Seamoth.

  • Ten pieces of Titanium to make one Titanium Ingot
  • Two batteries (made with two Acid Mushroom and one Copper Ore) and one Silicone Rubber (made with one Creepvine Seed Cluster) to make one Power Cell.
  • Four Quartz to make two Glasses.
  • One Creepvine Seed Cluster to craft one Lubricant.
  • One Lead.

Seamoth's upgrades

Seamoth's upgrades

Once you've gotten the hang of your Seamoth, you can customize it however you want. All you need to do is head over to a Moonpool equipped with a Vehicle Upgrade Console. These are the available upgrades for this type of vehicle:

  • Seamoth Depth Module: Increases the Seamoth's maximum crush depth.
  • Internal Storage: Install a 16-slot storage in the vehicle.
  • Hull Reinforcement: Increases the hull durability, thus decreasing collision damage.
  • Engine Efficiency: Uses thermal waste to increase battery life.
  • Solar Charger: Makes the Seamoth able to use the sun's energy to replenish the power supply.
  • Perimeter Defense System: Creates an electrical field to repel fauna.
  • Torpedo System: This allows you to fire torpedoes from the Seamoths.
  • Sonar System: Scans surrounding terrain and displays the topography in the HUD.

Prawn Suit

Prawn Suit in Subnautica

Top speed: 24 Kph.

Energy: Requires energy from two Power Cells

The Prawn Suit gives you all the mobility of being on your two feet while still protecting you from the outside world. This vehicle is ideal for those very deep areas that are too small for the Cyclops to get through. That's why this suit can reach 900 meters below water, with the option of that number going up to 1700 meters via upgrades.

This vehicle has 600 health and is way more resistant than the Seamoth, even being able to endure an attack from the Reaper Leviathan. However, once the health meter drops to zero, the suit will start to malfunction and eventually explode.

How to build a Prawn Suit

scanning a Prawn Suit fragment

Like all the other vehicles in the game, you'll first need to get its Blueprint by scanning the suit's fragments before you can craft it. You'll need four big fragments to unlock the recipe. Those are in:

  • The Aurora
  • The Wrecks
  • The Mountains
  • The Sea Treader's Path
  • The Underwater Islands

Once you complete the Blueprint, head over to the Mobile Vehicle Bay and craft the suit using the following ingredients:

  • Two Titanium Ingots and four Lithium to make two Plasteel Ingots.
  • Two Gel Sacks and two Ruby to make two Aerogel.
  • One Stalker Tooth and one Glass to make one Enameled Glass.
  • Two Diamonds.
  • Two Leads.

Upgrades available for the Prawn Suit

Prawn Suit upgrade modules

Using the Vehicle Upgrade Console, you can craft upgrades to customize your suit. These are the ones available:

  • Depth Module: Increases the vehicle crush depth.
  • Storage Module: Increases the vehicle storage
  • Hull Reinforcement: Decreases collision damage by 50%, but aggressive faun can still damage it.
  • Engine Efficiency Module: Recycle thermal waste, and it turns it into battery life.
  • Thermal Reactor: Makes the suit harness thermal energy to replenish the power supply.
  • Jump Jet Upgrade: Provides more acceleration and maneuverability to the suit.
  • Claw Arm: Adds a claw arm that can smash small rocks or harm aggressive fauna.
  • Drill Arm: Adds a component that can drill through Large Resource Deposits.
  • Grappling Arm: Adds a grappling claw to the vehicle that latches into objects and pulls the suit toward them.
  • Propulsion Cannon: Works just like the Propulsion Cannon tool, but this one is attached to the Prawn Suit.
  • Torpedo Arm: Works just like the torpedo launcher from the Seamoth.

Cyclops

Subnautica's Cyclops

Top Speed: 8m/s

Acceleration: 3m/s/s

Power: Replaceable power cells

The Cyclops is the ultimate vehicle in the game; this submarine is so giant you can even store a Seamoth or a Prawn Suit inside it. This big boy can reach 500 meters of depth, and that number can go up to 1700 meters once the Cyclops is fully upgraded.

The idea behind the Cyclops is to have a cross between a Seabase and a vehicle, so you're able to walk freely inside it and even place furniture inside using the Habitat Builder. This submarine has many features like three different cameras(controlled via the HUD and located below, above, and at the rear of the sub), three different speed settings (slow, standard, and flank); keep in mind that making the Cyclops quicker will make the vehicle generated more noise. However, only the big predators are a real threat to the vehicle.

How to craft a Cyclops

Scanning a Cyclops' fragments

Crafting a Cyclops will take some work on your part since you'll have to find and scan three different sets of fragments (keep in mind that each group requires you to scan three fragments as well, meaning you'll have to scan nine fragments in total). Still, considering the many dangers in Planet 4546B, having a vehicle with 1500 health like this one is totally worth it. These are the fragments you'll need to find:

  • Cyclops Hull fragments: Located at the Mushroom Forest and the Sea Treader's Path.
  • Cyclops Engine fragments: You'll find these at the Aurora, the Crag Field, the Crash Zone, the Mountains, and the Underwater Islands Wreck.
  • Cyclops Bridge fragments: These are in the Crash Zone, the Mushroom Forest, and the Sea Treader's Path.

Once you finally have the Blueprint for this vehicle, you'll need to find the ingredients and use the Mobile Vehicle Bay to craft it. These ingredients are:

  • Three Titanium Ingots and six Lithium to make three Plasteel Ingots.
  • Three Stalker Tooth and three Glass to make three Enameled Glass.
  • One Creepvine Seed Cluster to craft one Lubricant.
  • Three Lead ( a raw material found in large resources deposits located in different biomes)

Upgrades For The Cyclops

Upgrading the Cyclops

The Cyclops is a good vehicle, but it can be better; you can upgrade this submarine using the onboard Cyclops Upgrade Fabricator and customized it to your liking. These upgrades aren't permanent, as you can install and remove them using the engine room's six-slot panel.

Each upgrade will need different materials for you to craft them. Moreover, some upgrades will need you to find them, such as the engine efficiency module, which you'll need to grab from the modification storage in the drive core room in the Aurora. These are the upgrades you can make for the Cyclops:

  • Cyclops Depth Module: This one increases the maximum crush depth, making it possible for the vehicle to go to lower depths.
  • Engine Efficiency Module: This upgrade increases the vehicle's battery life.
  • Thermal Reactor Module: Uses thermal energy to replenish the power supply (more heat = more energy).
  • Sonar Module: The Cyclops will emit a sonic wave to read the surrounding terrain's topography.
  • Fire Suppression System Module: Extinguisehs fires automatically.
  • Docking Bay Repair Module: Repairs any docked Seamoth or Prawn Suit automatically.
  • Creature Decoy Tube Module: Increases the number of decoys.
  • Shield Generator Module: Creates a temporal shield around the vehicle.

Neptune Escape Rocket

Neptune Escape Rocket

This is the rocket where you escape Planet 4546B; you'll need to build it as part of the main story. You'll have to make five parts to assemble this rocket. Those are:

  • The Neptune Launch Platform
  • The Neptune Gantry
  • Neptune Ion Boosters
  • Neptune Fuel Reserve
  • Neptune Cockpit.
