The recent release of Sunbreak appears to have caused a spike in the Monster Hunter Rise player count on Steam. This has nearly doubled since the expansion pack was released earlier this week on June 30, 2022.

Monster Hunter Rise came out for PC towards the beginning of this year on January 12. While the game seems to have performed according to expectations in terms of sales, Monster Hunter Rise never quite gained enough traction to set records when it came to the number of concurrent players, turning the title into a sort of sleeper success on the platform. The release of Sunbreak has on the other hand caused Monster Hunter Rise to rocket right up to the top of the charts.

According to the database called SteamDB, the game peaked at around 135,000 concurrent players back in January, but Monster Hunter Rise clocked in at just over 231,000 concurrent players following the release of Sunbreak. While the base game had only 90,000 concurrent players on its launch day, the expansion pack was able to boast almost 195,000 concurrent players on the day of its release.

Sunbreak adds a whole bunch more monsters to the game in addition to a brand new region to explore. The expansion pack features “improved gameplay and nimble-feeling additions to combat mechanics, unique new monsters and hunting locales, and a new difficulty level in the form of Master Rank quests,” according to the developer, Capcom. “As the hunter who saved Kamura from calamity, you must now journey to the far off reaches of Elgado, an outpost near a Kingdom beset by a sinister new nemesis.”

The expansion pack has been well received by critics and players alike. The positive user reviews have been steaming in on Steam over the course of this past week.
