Someone has made a first-person horror game inspired by Super Mario 64.
As you'd expect from one of the most influential and popular games of all time, Super Mario 64 has been the basis for tons of fan-made mods over the years. Although you might think that you've seen it turned into pretty much everything at this point, the latest twist on the formula is something completely different - a first-person horror game.
As shown off by YouTuber AlphaBetaGamer, the short horror experience, titled Another Princess Is In Our Castle, was made by CM9_Animation. The description of the demo sets up the plot, "You play as Mario, the hero of the Mushroom Kingdom. You decide to come back to Peach's castle a few years after the princess' death, but something isn't quite right".
Footage of the demo in action shows Mario roaming around the halls of Princess Peach's castle, which looks like it was ripped directly from Super Mario 64, looking for eight different statuettes hidden in different rooms. To find the statues, players must explore each of its rooms and try to avoid the ghost of Princess Peach that's floating around waiting to kill Mario.
If the players runs into Peach, their only options are to run and hide from her in treasure chests scattered around the cattle, or submit defeat and get a loud jumpscare of Peach's ghost eating the plumber. I'm secure enough to admit to jumping the first time around. Once the player has collected all eight statuettes, they can unlock the final door and end the demo.
It's a pretty unique take on Super Mario 64 that we haven't seen before, and it looks like we might see it taken further, as CM9_Animation said this in the demo's description, "This is a Super Mario 64 inspired horror experience. It's currently just a demo, but I'm planning on making it a full game". Well, we doubt Nintendo's lawyers will allow that, but as it stands now this is a spooky take on a classic.
