Super Mario 64 is arguably the most popular speedrunning game of all time. As of right now, it still sits in the top three over on speedrun.com, only beat by Metroid Dread and Minecraft. And when a game has been in the big leagues for over two decades, it's fair to say that the competition gets fierce.

One of the categories, 16 star, has a new world record - and it's a close one. Runner Suigi managed to beat the game in just 14 minutes and 55 seconds, which takes the crown from the previous record by just one second.

The record was smashed live on Suigi's Twitch channel, and you can watch the run in action in the YouTube video below. As with pretty much all Super Mario 64 speedrunning, it's immensely satisfying to watch someone get every jump pixel perfect, performed by runners who know the game inside out now.

It remains to be seen how long the record sticks. The one Suigi beat was made just three months ago, and it's a hotly contested title.

This, of course, is just one of the categories in the Super Mario 64 speedrunning community. 16 stars, as the name would imply, means beating the game with 16 stars collected, but that isn't the lowest amount required. You can also take on Bowser with one, or even zero stars. The world records in these categories are 7:10, and 6:29 respectively, so there's a lot of blink-and-you'll-miss-it action. The former record has actually managed to stay in place since we reported on it back in July, showing just how optimized the route is.

Of course, this is far from the only game with an incredibly active speedrunning scene. Earlier this month, the world record for Majora's Mask 100 percent was beaten after three years. This brings the record down to five hours, 49 minutes, and 51 seconds - so it's a tad longer than today's feat.
