The iconic 1-1 stage from Super Mario Bros.  has been turned into a first-person shooter. The original 1985 game remains one of the most acclaimed titles of all time, and is celebrating its 34th anniversary this year.

By now, Super Mario Bros. needs no formal introduction. It is the most famous video game of all time. 34 years later, it's still a compelling game. It's fair to say most people have played the game at some point. For those who are currently growing up with the Switch as their primary console, Super Mario Bros. is readily available in the NES lineup through Nintendo Switch Online.

The stages in Super Mario Bros. changed the way side-scrollers were made forever. It can all be traced back to World 1-1. Here, Mario is introduced to common enemies, platforming, and the three core power-up items. The level has been remade countless times in Super Mario Maker 2, showing how legendary it is. Now, what if 1-1 was remade as a first-person shooter? That is what one designer sought to do.

Level designer Sean Noonan, whose credits include Star Citizen, Far Cry titles, Watch Dogs, and currently Gears Tactics, has remade Super Mario Bros. 1-1 as a first-person shooter. Check out the video below and be amazed.

As Noonan notes on his Twitter, the art style for the remake was meant to emulate the look of Super Mario 3D Land. Of course, Mario wouldn't use a pistol. The designer gave the character a plunger shooter. Overall, Noonan successfully captured the feel of Mario and recreated World 1-1 nicely, from the Question Mark blocks at the start, to the underground area.

Although some may claim Nintendo would never make a first-person shooter starring Mario, one such game does exist: Yoshi's Safari. This relatively obscure SNES game was released in 1993, and had Mario ride on Yoshi from a first-person point of view. The player would use the Super Scope accessory to fire at enemies. Unfortunately, the game has never been re-released, and it seems Nintendo has no plans to. Shooting things would return to the Mario series however, in the form of Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle. Going back to Noonan's work, it does make viewers consider how neat it would be to see Super Mario Bros. remade in 3D.
