Nintendo has revealed more information about the upcoming Lego Super Mario set, with a starter set that will launch in August and two expansion kits arriving in the future.

Nintendo announced a collaboration with Lego back in March, as part of the 35th-anniversary of the Super Mario Bros. series. The Lego Super Mario set involves an electronic figure with Bluetooth compatibility, which allows it to interact with different parts of the set in order to change Mario's expression and turn the toy into a game.

A new video on the Nintendo UK YouTube channel has revealed more information about the upcoming Lego Super Mario Starter Kit. The set can be pre-ordered today and units will be shipped starting from August 1 in North America and August 10 in the United Kingdom. The set will contain over two hundred and thirty-one pieces. The Mario figure requires two AAA batteries in order to function. The price for the starter kit is $59.99/£49.99.

The video also announced two expansions packs. The first is the Piranha Plant Power Slide Expansion Set, which has two piranha plants sitting at either end of a slide, and Bowser's Castle Boss Battle Expansion Set, containing a fortress with a huge Bowser figure. The Bowser set also contains a Boo and a Dry Bones figure.

The Lego Super Mario sets represent a collaboration that fans have waited years to see. The high price point will likely deter some people from purchasing the starter set, but it's not that harsh when you consider the features of the electronic Mario figure, which offers far more interactivity than you see in most modern Lego sets. The only question now is whether other Mario characters will receive Lego figures, as we have yet to see appearances from characters like Luigi or Princess Peach.
