Why wait for the actual Super Mario Odyssey when you can get most of the gameplay with this Super Mario 64 mod?

The latest Mario game, Super Mario Odyssey, was showcased at E3 just last Tuesday. In it, you can see that Mario has gained a fancy new hat that gives him new abilities, like spinning around and smashing baddies, or tossing it out and using it as a platform.

But perhaps the most intriguing new ability is the power to toss that hat onto another’s head and essentially possess them. The Odyssey trailer has Mario possessing everything from a goomba to a Tyrannosaurus.

YouTube user Kaze Emanuar thought that was a neat idea, but had a bit of a funding problem. “I can't buy a Switch,” Kaze writes below his mod trailer video, “but I can assemble code, so it doesn't matter.”

Instead, Kaze decided to mod the Nintendo 64 classic to include all the same abilities featured in the Super Mario Odyssey trailer. You can see in Kaze’s trailer video here that you can hop on your hat and possess enemies just as you can Odyssey. You can even possess random birds flying around the castle!

The only thing you can’t seem to do is use your hat as an attack, but given the fact that this is a one-person game mod we can forgive the slight lapse.

While the mod seems super cool, it doesn’t look like Mario 64 was designed with the possession mechanic in mind. At times the trailer makes it seem like certain sections of the game become trivial, such as passing by the blowing snowman in Cool, Cool Mountain.

Also, having a player-controllable platform that you can just place wherever and whenever you want breaks certain areas of the game, as the trailer demonstrates by allowing Mario access to stars that would otherwise require him to explore the map and perform key actions.

Regardless, this is one super cool mod to get your Mario-on before Odyssey’s release.

This isn’t the first mod for Kaze, either! Check out Kaze’s other mod, Colossal Circuits, which adds an entirely new playable area to Mario 64.
