Super Mario Odyssey on Nintendo Switch shines as the famed mascot's most enthralling and epic adventure to date. The game captivates with its array of colorful open-worlds, its fun range of challenges, and its wealth of Power Moons and other goodies for Mario to collect. Revolving around this vast, varied 3D platformer is the satisfying new ability to hit foes and objects with Mario's cap companion, Cappy, directly controlling them.

Like many mainline Mario games, Odyssey allows players to knock out the core campaign in a relatively short amount of time by sticking to the minimum amount of Power Moons to progress through each Kingdom.

At the same time, Super Mario Odyssey lives up to its name—offering ample content for those who seek all collectibles and wish to become fully immersed in this gripping journey. This array of content is further expanded by the added hide-and-seek minigame, Balloon World, which tasks players with hiding balloons for other players to locate.

This guide will cover the various collectibles and explain the degrees of "completion." It will also highlight how long the main storyline takes as well as the length of time for total game completion.

How Many Kingdoms And Collectables Are In The Game?

Mario and Cappy will be soaring in their airship, named the Odyssey, to a total of 17 unique Kingdoms. There are 14 as part of the main story, and 3 unlockable ones. Kingdoms include the expansive Sand Kingdom, the bustling Metro Kingdom, and the celestial Dark Side.

Coins

Each Kingdom offers 50 - 100 purple regional coins. These are one of the main collectibles in the game, which are used as regional currency at the Crazy Cap shops of their respective Kingdoms. There are a total of 1,000 purple coins throughout the game.

Outfits

Costumes for Mario can be purchased at the Crazy Cap store, along with items to decorate and deck out the Odyssey airship. There are a total of 40 outfits to buy or seek out in the game, 10 of which can be manifest in-game by scanning Amiibo. Outfits range from mechanic and pirate themes to a throwback from the N64 classic, Metal Mario.

Souvenirs

Cosmetic items for the ship are known as souvenirs and are representations of each unique Kingdom. Most worlds offer two or three of them, and 26 can be bought in total. This number is brought to 43 when including the stickers for each Kingdom.

Power Moons

Of course, the primary collectible that Mario will be seeking out is the Power Moons. There are 880 Power Moons that can be collected in the game's worlds. This tally leaps to a whopping 999 in total when including the added 119 that can be purchased at the Crazy Cap. A minimum of 124 Power Moons is needed to complete the campaign and reach Bowser.

250 will unlock the lunar Kingdom called Dark Side, and collecting 500 will unlock the larger Darker Side. Collecting all 880 unique Power Moons turns the Odyssey's sail gold and unlocks a painting in the Moon Kingdom's Wedding Hall. This allows players to fight through a tougher version of the final boss.

Notching all 999 Power Moons will officially complete the game, and trigger a large top hat being placed atop Peach's Castle. This yields a special celebration if Mario throws Cappy on top of it.

How Long Does The Core Campaign Take To Beat?

Super Mario Odyssey's core campaign will take roughly 12.5 hours on average.

This entails gathering the minimum 124 Power Moons, reaching the final boss, and defeating him.

How Long Does It Take For Extras And Total Game Completion?

Delving more deeply into Super Mario Odyssey and tackling the various "extras" will take over twice the amount of time as the core campaign, reportedly around 27 hours. Of course, this area is a bit ambiguous, as the degree of extras completed varies from player to player—as does what constitutes an "extra."

However, it's safe to assume that this entails getting the 500 Power Moons to reach and complete the secret Mushroom Kingdom, Dark Side, and Darker Side.

A total completion of the game involves collecting all 999 Power Moons, finding all 1,000 purple coins, and earning enough gold coins to purchase each of the 40 outfits for Mario and 26 items for the ship. According to How Long To Beat, this takes an average of 61.5 hours. That is an odyssey indeed!
