We've been waiting a long time for this, and it's finally happening: Nintendo is putting Super Nintendo games on the Nintendo Switch. During the September 4th Nintendo Direct presentation, it was announced that Nintendo Switch Online subscribers will get Super Nintendo games added to the lineup at no extra charge. There will also be a special edition USB-chargeable SNES controller released to go with these games. The games will be available as of Sept. 5th, while the controller will begin shipping on Sept. 18th.

The Super Nintendo games will function much like the NES games already available on Nintendo Switch online. The service will have 20 games at the start, from obvious classics like Super Mario World and Super Metroid to never-before-ported rarities like Stunt Race FX. All of the games will support a rewind feature as well as suspend points. Multiplayer games will support local and online. Here's the full list of launch games:

While subscribers will get all of the games for free, they can pay extra for a corresponding controller. Joy-Cons are perfectly compatible with all of these games, but Nintendo is offering a special SNES controller to those who want the authentic experience. The controller is shaped exactly like the old ones, but will connect wirelessly and have an internal rechargeable battery. Nintendo Switch Online subscribers can buy it for $29.99.

Nintendo Switch Online launched almost a year ago to cries of disappointment. The service was (and still is) cheaper than its Xbox and PlayStation counterparts, but many felt it was a rip-off. Above all, critics didn't like that they had to pay to play online games that had been free up until that point. And the perks Nintendo was offering didn't justify the sudden fee to play Splatoon 2 or Mario Kart 8 online. Among those perks were free NES classic games. But games like the original Super Mario Bros. have been ported so many times that they don't really constitute a special offer.

These Super Nintendo games are a little late to the party, but do go some way towards sweetening the deal. The fact that they're launching with a rare game and full rewind/suspend functions also helps. Nintendo Switch Online still isn't amazing, but it did get better.
