The game that kicked off one of the most unique fighting games in the genre, even kicking off debates on its place in the gaming community. Combining characters from many different sources, the series keeps expanding out into further reaches of the gaming universe. Super Smash Bros. 64 was the beginning, the maverick of the chain, and the opening to an entirely new competitive market.
One of the best things about the games continues to be the hidden content that can only be unlocked through accomplishments. From the ability to customize the game to exclusive stages to carry out the battle on, players that want the most out of the experience will have to grind out the requirements to reveal the game's full potential.
8 Sound Test
Not the most exciting of unlockables, but it still provides some content for those players that want to get every drop out of the game, sound test mode gives access to every sound byte in the entire game.
To unlock the mode in the data menu, players must take every single character through the Break The Targets bonus stage and Board The Platforms. While it may seem niche, some players want access to the whole cookie jar.
7 Mew
The rarest of the unlockables, Mew can appear out of the Pokéballs at a 1 in 151 chance. The exact number of Pokémon in the original series, it will take the lucky player to draw the legendary out into the game.
To unlock even the chance, players must unlock every character in the game. Though it doesn't have any effect on the battle, seeing as it just flies around before disappearing. Either a lucky view of the elusive beast or a useless animation that does no damage whatsoever.
6 Ness
Ness is the lead character of the Earthbound series and a worthy opponent in Super Smash Bros. The character has many projectile weapons that can send opponents into fits of rage with the continuous onslaught he can unleash. He may not look like the strongest of the bunch, but his bite is definitely worse than his bark.
This one is more straightforward with the unlock achieved as soon as you complete classic mode on normal difficulty with three lives or less. The kicker is that players can't use continues, making any death a mandatory restart, which can make for some frustrating failures.
5 Mushroom Kingdom
The one and only secret stage in the entire game, Nintendo brought fans back a classic that will give any old school Nintendo fans nostalgia. Besides, it sets the perfect stage for any player that likes to use Mario or Luigi as their main character.
This one gets a little trickier, as it requires other players, or at least that another controller be pugged in. Classic mode must be completed by all eight characters players receive at the start, then, each stage must be played in multiplayer.
4 Luigi
The most underrated character in Nintendo history, Luigi was forever looked down upon as mere sidekick before the spin-off series' started happening. The taller, higher jumping brother does happen to be little underpowered in the original game. Further evidence of the disrespect.
To obtain the lackluster clone, players have to beat Break The Targets bonus stage with all eight original players. Then you have to defeat him in battle, which shouldn't be hard unless you're using Jigglypuff for some odd reason.
3 Captain Falcon
One of the most iconic Smash characters in history, this racing combatant is a key character in a lot of player's arsenal. Coming in as the second-best character in the entire game, lagging only slightly behind Pikachu statistically.
It makes sense that this is one of the more difficult characters to unlock, making players get through Classic mode in twenty minutes without any continues. Afterward, it's a battle against him for the unlock, and it's the hardest unlockable battle in the game.
2 Jiggly Puff
While it might be the statistically worst character in the game, it's necessary if you want to complete the game and the Pokémon fans get a kick out of it. It also helps that it's the easiest unlock of the game, making it most players' first achievement.
All players have to do is complete a 1P game on any difficulty with any character. This will result in a fight in which they should win, and, if not, it's time for a very hard look in the mirror. She does make for an excellent training tool if players are looking to put themselves at a disadvantage.
1 Item Switch
One of the oddest unlockables to date, Item switch allows players to choose what items are dropped in multiplayer matches. The option itself isn't strange, but the fact that players have to unlock it is, as the developers really make players work for the gameplay experience.
To open up these options, players will have to complete 100 multiplayer matches in total. Though they can be done against the computer, that's still a lot of time in front of the screen. Talk about sore thumbs.
