The next DLC character to be added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is Hero from the Dragon Quest series, who is technically four characters in one. The base form of Hero is the Luminary from Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, and he has three costumes that are based on other Dragon Quest protagonists - Erdrick from Dragon Quest III: Seeds of Salvation, Solo from Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen, and Eight from Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King.

The appearance of Hero in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate has been met with some negativity from the fanbase, as Dragon Quest isn't as popular internationally as it is in Japan. A person who is not familiar with the Dragon Quest series might see Hero as just another magic-user/swordsman combo, which is something that Super Smash Bros. Ultimate already has plenty of.

It's likely that Square Enix wanted Hero to appear in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in order to promote the series internationally, since that tactic previously worked with the Fire Emblem series. The majority of the Dragon Quest games have excellent ports on mobile phones, but it might help to learn more about the various versions of Hero and their stories before taking the plunge and trying them out for yourself.

Erdrick

Erdrick Super Smash Bros Ultimate Hero

Erdrick isn't actually the name of the main character of Dragon Quest III: Seeds of Salvation, as the player is expected to choose a name at the start of the game and Erdrick will be refused if selected. The name Erdrick is actually a title of great significance that is bestowed upon only the mightiest of heroes and its presence is felt throughout the series in the form of different references.

The version of Erdrick from Dragon Quest III: Seeds of Salvation can be either male or female. The female version is actually the optimal choice for those who want the most powerful party, as the "Vamp" personality trait offers lots of bonuses to male party members and it has no male equivalent.

Erdrick's story is a predecessor to that of the original Dragon Quest and is set in the same world. The father of Erdrick was a warrior named Ortega, who fell in battle against a powerful demon named Baramos. On Erdrick's sixteenth birthday, he/she follows in their father's footsteps and gathers a party of adventurers in order to slay Baramos, which eventually pits them against the demon lord known as Zoma, who has the power to plunge the world into darkness.

Solo

Solo Super Smash Bros Ultimate Hero

Solo is the default name of the protagonist of Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen, who can also be either male or female depending on the player's preference.

The player is briefly given control of Solo during the prologue of the remakes of Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen, where it seems as if he is living an idyllic fantasy life in a secluded village. The next four chapters follow different heroes on seemingly disconnected quests; a knight named Ragnar searches for lost children, a rogue princess named Alena sneaks out of the castle to attend a fighting tournament, a merchant named Torneko wants to open a store, and two sisters named Maya and Meena want to avenge the murder of their father. These characters learn of the existence of a legendary hero who has appeared in the world and it becomes their task to track him down and guide him to his destiny.

The fifth chapter of Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen returns to Solo, whose town is destroyed by the servants of Psaro the Manslayer. Solo must gather the heroes from the other chapters in order to stop Psaro, who wishes to wipe humanity from the face of the world.

Eight

Eight Super Smash Bros

The version of Hero from Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King was specifically added to appeal to a western audience, as that was one of the most well-regarded entries outside of Japan.

Eight started out as a lowly soldier at the royal castle in the kingdom of Trodain. One day, a jester named Dhoulmagus appears at the castle and steals a powerful magical scepter from within its vaults. Dhoulmagus unleashes a terrible curse on the castle which turns almost all of the residents into plants. The king is turned into a horrible frog creature, while the princess is turned into a horse.

The only person who escapes unscathed from Dhoulmagus' curse is Eight, who must take the princess and the king on a journey to break the curse that has afflicted the people of Trodain. As they travel the world, they discover that Dhoulmagus has left only terror in his wake and Eight soon finds companions who also have a score to settle with the mad jester.

The Luminary

Luminary Super Smash Bros Ultimate Hero

The Luminary is the title of the hero of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age, which is given to those who are believed to be the reincarnation of an ancient warrior who returns to the world to battle against evil.

The reason why people know that the protagonist of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age is the Luminary is due to a strange mark that appears on his hand. The Luminary discovers on his eighteenth birthday that he is adopted, as his parents found him floating down a river as a baby. It's up to the Luminary to venture out into the world in order to discover the truth behind his parentage and find the source of evil that is rumored to have been reborn in the world.

We won't go into too many details about the Luminary's backstory here, as there are fans who will be holding off on playing Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age until it's ported to the Nintendo Switch later this year. Rest assured that there is a lot more to the Luminary's story than meets the eye and the ending of the game has a huge revelation that might alter the player's perception of the story.
