Nintendo has finally buckled to public demand and appears to be re-releasing its official Super Smash Bros. Ultimate GameCube controllers in 2020.

Controllers are a bigger part of a gaming experience on a console than many people likely realize. Some developers have found a design they love and stuck with it, such as PlayStation. Meanwhile, others continue to experiment, adapt, and innovate. No company has done that more than Nintendo when it comes to controllers. It drastically changes with every new console.

That's due to the fact that the way in which gamers play Nintendo games changes with each passing console. Wiimotes lent themselves to the active nature of most of the console's games. Meanwhile, Switch joy-cons are perfect for playing the console in handheld mode, but also easily detached when its time to move things on up to the big screen.

The trouble is, not all of Nintendo's games live exclusively on one console. Titles such as Mario Kart and Super Smash Bros. have continued on, getting new and updated titles. When it comes to Smash, there has been no better controller to play the game than the ones that came with the GameCube - so much so that when Nintendo released some official Smash Ultimate replicas for the Switch, they were snapped up.

In typical Nintendo fashion, it was a case of once they're gone, they're gone, and they were gone real fast. However, Destructoid recently stumbled upon a listing on Nintendo's official UK store confirming that the controllers will return. The date is a little vague, "late January 2020" and lists the product at £24.99, which works out as a little less than $33. Fingers crossed the controllers will return worldwide and not just to the UK.

There are third party GameCube/Switch controllers, of course, but nothing compares to the real thing. Plus, as far as we're aware, there are no joy-con drift issues with these classic Smash controllers. The Switch's joy-cons are all well and good, but when in the throes of battle with some of the world's finest Smash players, only a GameCube controller will do.
