The next Super Smash Bros. Ultimate online tournament event has been revealed and it will pit heroes and villains against each other.

The 4.0.0 patch for Super Smash Bros. Ultimate added online tournaments to the game, which have rotating rule sets every few days, ranging from 1v1 Omega stage matches with no items or stage hazards, to four-player free for alls with items on and the most annoying stages up for selection.

The theme for the next online tournament in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is Heroes Vs. Villains. It seems that character matchups and player selection in tournaments will be based on which character the player picks going in. The prizes for competing (and winning) a Heroes Vs. Villains tournament are spirits.

The theme of the tournament is related to the fact that the most recent playable character added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate is Hero from Dragon Quest, who makes up for his slow speed with a huge range of spells and special abilities. Hero has become a popular character online, but he hasn't been available for long, so his competitive viability in tournaments has yet to be established.

The key art image for the event shows Hero, Fox, Link. Mario, and Samus standing back-to-back against Ganondorf, Bowser, King K. Rool, Meta Knight, and Ridley, while Wolf's ship flies overhead. It seems as if the heroes team is going to have a lot more playable characters during this tournament, as the Super Smash Bros. series has mostly included protagonists from different video games on the roster, which has almost always been heroes. It wasn't until Super Smash Bros. Ultimate that the series included some highly-anticipated villains on the roster, such as Dark Samus, King K. Rool, and Ridley, as fans had been asking for their inclusion for years. The question now is whether any more villains will be added to the game as DLC characters, as there are still two slots left.

The Heroes Vs. Villains tournament in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will be held from August 9 to August 12.
